Should Congress ban high-capacity gun magazines?

Do You Support a Ban on High-Capacity Gun Magazines?

by Alyssa Milano | Updated on 2.12.19

As we come up on the tragic one-year anniversary of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas, please take a moment to speak out against gun violence. Learn more in the piece from Countable below, and make your opinion heard above on the issue of banning high-capacity gun magazines.

What’s the story?

  • As we near the one-year anniversary of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas in Parkland, Florida, a group of Democratic lawmakers are reintroducing legislation that would ban high-capacity gun magazines.

What’s the bill?

  • The "Keep Americans Safe Act” would make it a crime to knowingly import, sell, manufacture, transfer, or possess any magazine that exceeds 10 rounds of ammunition.

What are both sides saying?

  • The legislation was cosponsored by Rep. Ted Deutch (D-FL) and Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ).
  • Deutch, whose district includes Parkland, pointed to a surfeit of mass shootings, including Las Vegas and Sandy Hook, arguing that "high-capacity magazines make those shooters dramatically more dangerous. You've got to take action to address it."
"The fact is that these high-capacity magazines allow someone to fire off more than 10 rounds in a row. You don't need that if you're a hunter, you don't need that for any purpose. You don't need that for sporting purposes."
  • Jennifer Baker, a spokeswoman for the National Rifle Association, dismissed the Keep America Safe Act:
  • "This legislation would effectively ban the most commonly owned firearms for self-defense. It is an arbitrary limit pulled out of thin air with no evidence that the limits would improve public safety. In fact the after report from the deadliest school shooting in American history states that magazine limits would have had no impact.”
“This is just more nonsense from anti-gun zealots who are looking to score political points by proposing legislation that would make criminals out of law-abiding citizens exercising their constitutional right to self-defense while doing nothing to deter criminals from committing crimes," Baker added.

"The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes.... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." - Thomas Jefferson, Commonplace Book (quoting 18th century criminologist Cesare Beccaria), 1774-1776

Even our trained military and police aren't that proficient in a stressful situation. Why make Americans less able to defend themselves because bad people break the law.

Is there a good reason to have them? I would like to hear it. My husband is an avid hunter and there is no reason he would ever need it for hunting. Let’s do a little compromise here and make them illegal.

When I was 15 in Kirkwood, mom friend sitting next to me was shot close range in the head by his best friend . The gun was left there by an adult who said it wasn't loaded. The victims brains and blood covered my face and head. I have suffered with panic attacks my whole life. There are Far too many guns floating around unsecured. It is insane and Medieval. We can be a better country.

Too many innocent lives have been lost and will continue to be lost without stricter gun laws. Gun incidents to date don't just represent a slap in the face to grieving relatives but much worse; we live among evil humans who value money over human life.
