Trump: 'I Can’t Say I’m Thrilled' on Border Security Compromise

And you? How do you feel about the deal?

by Axios | Updated on 2.12.19

President Trump said in a Cabinet meeting Tuesday that he's "not happy" about the deal reached in a bipartisan conference Monday night to keep the government open past Feb. 15. He did not say whether or not he would support the bill.

The state of play: Lawmakers have been waiting for Trump to weigh in after a border security deal — which only includes about $1.4 billion for barrier construction — was reached Monday night. On Sunday, acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney said the administration would secure the border, either by reprogramming leftover government funds or by declaring a national emergency.

During the Cabinet meeting, Trump alluded to moving money around from "less important areas" to build the wall:

"So I can tell you that -- am I happy at first glance? I just got to see it. The answer is no, I'm not. I'm not happy. But am I happy with where we're we're going? I'm thrilled, because we're supplementing things and moving things around and we're doing things that are fantastic and taking from far less -- really from far less important areas. "

Moving funding around to pay for the wall is unacceptable. Trump's wall should not be allowed to be built under any circumstances. Trump's wall goes against everything the Statue of Liberty stands for.

Who gives a hoot about moron’s happiness? Why are sycophants, maga morons, gop, evangelicals stroking this narcissists ego? This is what happens to everything he touches ..... The publisher of the National Enquirer, has been facing steep financial losses that have left the once-loyal keeper of Donald Trump’s secrets with more than $1 billion in debt and a negative net worth. God help you & God help America! Not paying your bills, shortchanging creditors, bullying people, lying cheating stealing does not make you a shrewd businessman! Proper term is THIEF!

It’s called compromise, Donald. Not sure how that works, call any other democratic country’s leaders, besides just talking to Russia and North Korea.

I am glad they got a deal done in the set amount of time. It is deal that avoids another hurtful shutdown. It gives Trump some of his funding for a border barriar at the same time gives some of the liberals some of what they want in the deal. Both sides win and lose but both win for working for the betterment of the American people.

That $1.375 of taxpayer monies was provided for new fencing and ‘other barriers‘ allowing for 55 miles of new structure, is more than generous. The bill clearly states that new barriers are limited to current structure designs. That means #45’s bright shiny prototypes are a resounding NO! The truth is a majority of Americans DO NOT WANT A USELESS WALL. That’s the truth. In his pep rally last night, #45 outright lied about the number of violent crimes in the city of El Paso. In an interview with Mayor Dee Margo (R), said #45’s statements was a lie. Why should lie be different than the others? In the past, #45 has said I was confused about the question or I was misquoted, etc. This time, the El Paso barrier statement was planned in his State if the Union address and at his pep rally. Therefore without a question, this lie was planned and deliberately said to instill fear.

I do not want a wall. It will just have to be torn down at some point. We do not need a wall. WE NEED A LEADER NOT A DICTATOR. There are so many other things America requires and a wall is not on the list.

Wow. He got a lesson in how government works regarding money and how you use it. It’s not his piggy bank. They’ll have to come up with another lie about something now.

Trump has done everything he can. This is on the people for letting Dems take the House. I have never seen such a disgusting display of hate towards a sitting President. Dems would rather flood our nation with illegal immigrants to squash Trump and make sure they don’t lose the next election. They are to naive to see that they are giving our nation away. Many of these immigrants do not wish our country well and others are here to be fed and taken care of on a permanent basis. LEGALimmigration is the ONLY way.

Since the President and his Administration won’t research or listen to the experts on border safety I expect you to! That’s your job and why you are in Washington. Do what’s right and not what the President wants to appease his base and try to fulfill his ill conceived campaign promise. Don’t let him bully you. Is that how you want to be remembered? Stand up for what you know is right and whatever you do don’t let him use federal employees as pawns again!

Minimum should’ve stayed firm at 5.7 billion - Peloser failed to make it (or any damn thing) happen - I know our honorable President considers us, we the people, AMERICANS, w/ every move he makes & thus wanted to avoid another shutdown BUT I wish he would decline the absurd 1.3 & DECLARE NATIONAL STATE OF EMERGENCY- The crisis at the border is REAL! The illegal aliens in our country are already OUT OF CONTROL & borders must be closed/force those “seeking asylum” to do so LEGALLY w/ ZERO ZERO ZERO EXCEPTIONS! The United States of AMERICA is a country of LAWS & our Governments first duty is to protect American Citizens & enforce our frikn LAWS! As a taxpayer - I’m sick & tired of illegals getting a free ride & being treated better than our own citizens- especially our military veterans & their families! America should be first! The airline flight attendants tell you to place your oxygen mask first & then help others - America must put America FIRST! Take care of AMERICA/AMERICANS before even attempting to help the rest of the world! If we continue to crumble & fall apart w/in our country how can we possibly be in any position to help the rest of the world? I love Donald Trump! No President has ever been more dedicated or worked as long & hard as DJT does for us! He loves America which is how it’s supposed to be. . . Obama was an absolute DISGRACE! An Anti American Muslim born in Kenya living in OUR house for eight years will go down in history as the worst years in America’s history w/out doubt. #GodBlessAmerica & #GodBlessTrump

Trump said he can't say he thrilled about border security. Well I can't say I am thrilled about Trump. I guess that makes two of us that are not thrilled.

I don’t give a flying fk about his “happiness” This “deal” isn’t perfect, but nothing is going to be. It is a deal. If it keeps the government open and gives us a 21st rather than 4th century border, so be it. We can deal.

The wall will do nothing except ruin the local environment and restrict wildlife from crossing the boarder. Even if it spanned the entire boarder, people who want to cross illegally will find a way to do so - this isn’t the Middle Ages. People are smart and they have resources. The wall is a waste of time, resources and taxpayer money. You want to put up cameras and patrol the boarder, fine, but a physical obstruction is unacceptable and moot. Also Rand, keep your special interest constituent’s greedy hands out of Daniel Boone National Forest. That Forest does more for this state than you know and allowing even a part of it to be destroyed (a slippery slope) will be perpetually detrimental to our state’s natural beauty, diversity of plant and animal life, and (most importantly) the local tourism driven by Forest’s existence. We, the vast majority of the states residents don’t want a shopping mall in it and we certainly don’t see the need for a shopping mall in it. We don’t want it logged. We don’t want neighborhoods carved into it. We don’t want more farmland, we have plenty. We certainly don’t want any industry taking up residence and polluting it. Whatever the plans are, they are not worth what the Forest is worth in its current condition. Wildlife needs a place to call home and that Forest is their last place within the state to go. Once gone, many plants and animals will never return. So please do not allow them to sway you, put some actual conservation back into conservatism, and take the provisions to axe the Forest out of your amended version of the bill.
