The DC: 🌿 Green New Deal, and... Do you 'want the truth' on Trump's tax returns?

by Countable | 2.11.19

Welcome to Monday, state-building animals....

Just how many greenbacks will the Green New Deal Cost?

"The Green New Deal," proposed last week by Congressional Democrats - including millennial superstar Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) - is an ambitious economic stimulus package aimed at tackling climate change and environmental issues by 2020.

Some of the resolution's top goals include achieving net-zero U.S. greenhouse gas emissions through "fair and just transition for all communities and workers," investing in climate-friendly infrastructure, and "decarbonizing" all major sectors of the economy.

The big question? What will it cost.

Critics argue the Green New Deal sets unrealistic goals, like eliminating all energy derived from fossil fuel and nuclear power. And they say it goes well beyond environmental policies by calling for guaranteed “economic security for those willing or unwilling to work.”

Whether you vote YEA or NAY, it's definitely a must-watch piece of legislationfor reasons you may not have considered.

Listen to the Daily Dose on The Green New Deal here.

Then tell your reps: Should the House Call for a 'Green New Deal' to Fight Climate Change and Income Inequality?

On the Radar

  • Congress has until February 15 to reach a budget agreement or face another partial government shutdown—and with border security talks stalling, the risks for a shutdown are increasing. Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL), chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, told "Fox News Sunday" that the odds of a deal are 50-50. "I think the next 24 hours are crucial. We could close some deals, but they've got to be good, to secure our borders." Meanwhile, Trump tweeted Sunday: "I don’t think the Dems on the Border Committee are being allowed by their leaders to make a deal. They are offering very little money for the desperately needed Border Wall & now, out of the blue, want a cap on convicted violent felons to be held in detention!" Do Democrats & Trump need to cut a deal on border security funding?

  • Two Republican members of Congress sent a letter to House Democrats, urging them to stop the hunt for President Trump’s tax returns. Republican Reps. Mike Kelly (PA) and Kevin Brady (TX) said that Democrats’ attempts to obtain Trump’s tax returns threaten the privacy of all U.S. taxpayers. At the same time, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is arguing that Americans "want the truth" about Trump's taxes and “overwhelmingly” support Congress reviewing the returns. Should Democrats pursue Trump’s tax returns?

Under the Radar

  • Lawmakers in Hawaii have advanced a proposed ban on killing sharks and rays in state waters. Unlike many marine mammals, sharks are not a federally protected species—however many states have laws against the sale of their fins. Rep. Nicole Lowen (D-North Kona), chairwoman of the House Environmental Protection and Energy Committee, said: “As apex predators, sharks and rays help to keep the ocean ecosystem in balance, and protecting them from unnecessary harm is essential to the health of our coral reefs.” Critics of the ban say "it seems to be very extreme to outlaw any taking of sharks." Do you support a ban on killing sharks?

  • Friday marked the now-missed deadline for President Trump to identify and punish those behind the death and disappearance of Saudi Journalist Jamal Khashoggi. In October, a bipartisan group of senators imposed a 120-day deadline for Trump to submit a report to Congress determining who was responsible for the brutal killing of Khashoggi. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle introduced legislation Thursday that would block U.S. arms sales to Saudi Arabia and impose mandatory sanctions on those found responsible for Khashoggi’s death. “It is not in our national security interests to look the other way when it comes to the brutal murder of Mr. Jamal Khashoggi," said Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), one of the GOP senators who authored the bill. Should Congress punish Saudi Arabia?

But wait, there's more!

And, in the End…

Congress convenes this week looking to avoid another partial government shutdown by approving funding for border security before Friday night’s deadline―but that’s not all that will be happening in the Capitol.

The Senate starts its week Monday with the consideration of a bipartisan natural resource and public lands management package, including debates on amendments and a procedural vote to limit further debate in advance of a passage vote later in the week.

Once the public lands package is in the rear view mirror, the Senate is expected to take up the nomination of William Barr to be Attorney General.

Yes, we want trump’s taxes. We also need to make turning over tax returns a requirement to run for office. Yes, we want renewable energy. It may not be possible for us to move completely right away but that should certainly be our goal. For those who say renewables are too expensive I say fossil fuels are too expensive as they cost lives. Renewable may cost more money at first but I think they will pay for themselves with higher wages for producers of wind turbines and solar panels, installation and maintenance will pay well. They will certainly pay as well as coal mining with lower health risks and costs.

Why would you NOT want to see Trump’s tax returns? Every president since Ford has voluntarily released them, and none have had so many questions about mixing personal and presidential finances. That the GOP is do incurious gives you a clue.

Trump gave his required financials when he registered to run for office, nothing further should be pursued just because the Dems are living in sour grapes right now. I believe every Congressman should release their tax records to the public including all financial ties to foreign govts even through subsidiaries. Then they should release all $ paid in their behalf for sexual harassment settlements. The green deal is a joke and can’t be considered seriously if you’ve actually read it.

Transparency, that is what we need to see from our government, Trump said is was going to drain the swamp, he brought the biggest and dirtiest swamp with him that this county has ever seen, Trump and his family is making money from his hotels over charging, making heads of states and Other countries stay at his hotels, that’s not right, in order to get favors from his administration. We should be saying lock him up.

How About Some Democratic Tax Return Investigations Folks? OR ARE WE SEEING THE “INFAMOUS” DOUBLE STANDARD AGAIN? 😂😂😂😂😂 I’d rather be seeing the Democratic Senators & Representatives Tax Returns for the follow Democratic SENATORS and REPRESENTATIVES. I’m sure that the results would be very revealing and informative on ALL of them: HOUSE DEMS: @NancyPelosi ‪@RepAdamSchiff‬ @DWStweets @RepMaxineWaters @RepWilson @RepCohen SENATE DEMS: @chuckschumer @SenWarren @SenFeinstein @KamalaHarris @PattyMurray @CoryBooker WHILE they are at it, add @RevAlSharp (Al Sharpton) to the list, if they can find any of his recent Tax Returns filings. I really suspect that their response to such a request would be a swift “Negative” as it would be an invasion of their individual privacy. 😂 It’d be be another example of their tried and true “Double Standard” DEMOCRATIC defense tactic. 🤔 Any bet takers? SneakyPete.......... 🙀😂😂😂🙀. 2*11*19.....

What difference does it make I like to see all of Congress and the countless employees that work for us as well. You work for the government then you must also show your taxes 5 years of them. How many are there that do not pay their taxes I bet the key big mouths in Congress have things to hide. A tax return does not influence my voting move on.

Trump’s taxes are not his personal business anymore, when he became president, that is why it has always been shown. To show if there is corruption, money laundering $$$, Financial gains with foreign powers and corporations $$$, Possibility of black mail and corporation kick back $$$. 1) he has not removed himself from his businesses dealings, 2) He only stay at his business at tax payer experience $$$ 3) has not shown any meaningful tax statement. 4) just about every appointment is being investigated, Indictment or going to jail. 5) He is Pathological liar and anything he says you can not believe. 6) why are the GOP defending everything he does, what does he have on them? 7) he has Secret meetings with Putin. 8) He Embrace dictatorship and alienate countries that are friends and partners. 9) His Trump college was fraud. 10) His foundation was fraud. 11) This is not even talking about Russia! He and some of the GOP will be lucky if he only gets impeached and not jail, plus drag some of the GOP and family with him.

At this point, 2 years into the term, I do not care about the tax returns. I care about job performance and results. If job retention in Congress were strictly based on those criteria there would be a lot of terminations. Representative Ocasio-Cortez should be commended for launching a political career at such a young age but, at this point, she doesn’t know what she doesn’t know. You cannot throw out an idea like the “Green New Deal” without the facts about costs, impacts, and expected results. Private industry and innovation can take us in the directions we want to go. We should focus on key areas and invite representatives of different industries to present products and ideas that could push us in better directions. For example, in residential construction we continue to use asphalt shingle as the primary product for roofing. It is a petroleum based product that is energy inefficient, lasts on 15-20 years, and ends up in a landfill. Go with metal roofing products and you get the opposite. Not to mention that you would help the industries that the 232 tariffs were trying to protect. This is a common sense idea. Start with ideas that are realistic and make sense.
