Monday afternoon President Trump is scheduled to speak at the annual American Farm Bureau Convention in Nashville, TN. It will be the first time an American president has addressed the group in 25 years, reports the New York Times.
The president is expected to cover efforts to boost rural prosperity, as well as the expiring farm bill, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the roll out of recommendations from a task force charged with working on agriculture and rural issues, according to the Tennessean.
Excerpts of the speech released by the White House feature President Trump touting the benefits of the recent tax bill for farmers, yet, according to the Times, "new analyses of the tax law by economists at the Department of Agriculture suggest it could actually lower farm output in the years to come and effectively raise taxes on the lowest-earning farm households, while delivering large gains for the richest farmers."
President Trump is also likely to run into some pushback if he discusses a rollback of NAFTA, which could have significant effects on U.S. farmers. Farmers, Republican lawmakers, and even Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue have advocated for the president not to leave the trade agreement.
The Farm Bureau endorsed the tax bill, but has advocated for the U.S. to remain a part of NAFTA.
Do you think the tax bill is a boon for farmers or not? What would you like to see in the upcoming farm bill? What kind of efforts would you like to see being initiated in rural America? Do you believe the U.S. should leave NAFTA?

I’ll file that under clean coal 2 He conned the miners He conned his base trying to con farmers Can I get an amen
The only thing 45 knows that has anything to do with agriculture is horse-shit.
Yalp, Trump has promised the farmers some things that he can’t deliver on so he’s going to try to snow them into believing he delivered. If they are like the rest of his base they will believe whatever he says.
Like Regan, he will turn on small farmers, who are civilized, to help corporate farmers that encage animals and treat them in brutal ways while filling their bodies with chemicals. Monsanto makes our crops unacceptable to other countries while they fill our store shelves. We should be doing just the opposite. NAFTA needs to be revised but in the area of manufacturing not farming. Trump is making no effort to keep his promises to his voters.
I was under the impression that this very informative sight was designed to allow the American people to express their opinions on the state of our government, not to attack others who do not share those opinions. This is precisely why our country is dysfunctional and divided. It is easier to attack some unknown entity via an anonymous post than it would be to have meaningful conversations on bringing this nation closer together. Since he started on the campaign trail, DJT has told his supporters what they wanted to hear not caring whether those statements are true. Remember the wall on our southern border for which Mexico was going to pay? His latest request is for $18B US taxpayer dollars to fund PART of that wall. Mexico does not pay taxes to the US government. Telling farmers only he supports them and every Democrat in the country is a heathen and unpatriotic falls into that same realm. He is an expert showman pandering to a base of supporters to enrich himself, not them. The tax deal is NOT for the average family farmer. It is for the big corporate farms that are squeezing out the family farms in this country. We all have different ideologies and views of our nation and the world - that is what makes us human. We should all have the common idea to come together, shut out the noisy rhetoric and work to bring equality and freedom back to the citizens of this nation. That should be what makes us Americans.
I only believe the tax bill is a help for farmers and the average American if these tax cuts were permanent. But they’re not. You know which ones are though? The ones for corporations.
I see a bunch of liberal anti Trump whiners on this post. If you listen to his speech & the things his administration has help the farmers with maybe you would be more inclined to post such negative. The level of political education you whiners is a disgrace to Americans. His agriculture plans, does nothing but help these farmers from loosing a family run farm that has been around for decades if not century’s. But if you were politically educated you would know exactly what it does.
These corporations to grow vegetables and fruits need to quit using chemicals that is killing us American people. And the reason why is because they can’t make as much money if it’s to grow naturally because of the bugs but they make billions every year but the heck with Americans and their lives
First of all what does the Liar in Chief know about farming? He'd never get his hands dirty or even begin to know what working a field entails. Once again, his tax plan benefits the big, wealthy farms. Just once, I wish a politician that's suppose to be working for all of us would do what's right for all of us and not just the top 1%...
I am a commercial driver transitioning into farming. Currently operating on small acreage, but with plans for expansion. 45 does NOT represent my needs or interests.
What is 45 doing about Industrial Hemp farming?
He’s FARMING corporations need to quit putting chemicals all over our food that is what’s making people sick and causing all kinds of illnesses why can’t we just go back to natural food because you know why because they can’t make the money they want to make so the American people eat their chemicals day in and day out. THEN DIE!!!!
45 lies to everyone and the farmers are no different..this idiot doesn't give a damn about anyone except himself!!!
Continue NAFTA, too much at stake if you don’t. Farmers are the backbone of this Country and to other Countries as well. We are too use to fruits and vegetables available all year long, forgetting the seasonably available foods per region should we have to rely on only those foods. With climate change that discussion maybe closer then you think. The family farm still sustains many small rural communities. Monsanto is not the only farmer.
Total Embarrassment talking right in your mouth, My Golden Boy, What did you say to me? I'm Listening and I'm Watching you, with the help at Countable app, and I'm Using Cyber Smile Foundation against the FCC Chairman, and Bullying is not Okay to me.
Unfortunately to many small farmers are easy prey for the popularism of a showman like DJT they may need to learn the hard-way while we all suffer
I hope they bring cow chips with them. Nothing has ever been a boon to farmers. They have always suffered from governmental prejudices against them to reward the big Ag companies which are not farmers. There’s a reason no president has addressed this group in 25 years. Genetically modified seed which produces bigger harvests is proprietary and independent farmers cannot compete. Government creates legislation and regulations against the independents and for big Ag which has millions of dollars to contribute to politicians. Govt ignores the dilemma into which independent farmers are placed. A dilemma which causes more and more independent farmers to lose their farms or end farming altogether. Independent farmers are not able to make a profit due to high costs and low prices created by the federal govt and big Ag’s desire to force out independent farmers. That is a huge obstacle created by the government’s decisions for big money. Fixing that would benefit independent farmers and create a better opportunity for them to continue to operate. But the Feds follow the money. I am certain that trump has no earthly clue how farming operates or the machinations of the federal govt on it.
