Acting Attorney General Whitaker Testifies He Has Not Interfered in Mueller Investigation

Do you support the Mueller investigation?

by Axios | Updated on 2.8.19

Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker testified to the House Judiciary Committee Friday that he has "not interfered, in any way, with the special counsel's investigation."

The big picture: Whitaker's highly anticipated hearing was temporarily thrown into doubt Thursday after he informed the panel he would not appear unless he received assurances that he would not be served with a subpoena for invoking executive privilege. Whitaker has come under scrutiny from Democrats over his past criticisms of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, as well as his decision not to recuse himself from overseeing the probe against the recommendation of at least one Justice Department ethics official.

Other highlights:

  • On his discussions with Trump: "I have not talked to the president of the United States about the special counsel’s investigation. ... [Before becoming acting AG], I did not talk about my views about the Mueller investigation with anyone in the White House."
  • On the scope of Mueller's mandate: "In my experience, it's consistent with the appointments of other special counsels."
  • On whether the Mueller probe is a "witch hunt": "It would be inappropriate for me to talk about an ongoing investigation."
  • On his past comments about hamstringing the Mueller probe: "I have not denied any funds to the special counsel's investigation."
  • On his decision not to recuse himself: After a contentious back-and-forth, Whitaker said, "I consulted with career ethics officials. I consulted with my senior staff. I consulted with the Office of Legal Counsel. It was my decision to make. I decided not to recuse."
  • On his comments about Mueller wrapping up: "Bob Mueller is going to finish his investigation when he wants to finish his investigation. ... I have no reason to believe he's not honest."

Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker testified to the House Judiciary Committee, voided answering yes and no, because he could purger himself. Also there is nothing in the constitution that a president can not be indicted. With so many irons in the Russian fire pit, it could be another year to get them all out. Trump only hires least informed and most incompetent people then him, which is hard to fine, but his racists base will rise to the occasion and step forward, and be the next fall guy. What interesting is they already have enough to impeach Trump, they just want to get to the truth about all the involvement and who!

Trump sold himself as someone who was very knowledgeable, that he hired only the best people. Yet, an inordinate number if the people he has hired are criminals. Trump himself keeps repeating, ‘NO COLLUSION’, even when it’s not part of the conversation, is an obvious sign to anyone but the most partisan of observers. The Republicans in Congress have been protecting him for two years. Time is up.

That’s nice, until we find out in a month...a year... fill in the blank...that he was lying and having sex with...fill in the blank... and stole ... billions from the tax payers, but whose unethical behavior was ignored/reward by their party.

Mueller should be allowed to complete his investigations and have his report released to the public (redacted as necessary to exclude classified material) without any interference by the newly incoming Attorney General or anyone else. The tax payers are footing the bill for these investigations and deserve to see the results. We need transparency in government.

It is my sincere hope that acting Attorney General Whitaker did everything he can to interfere with the Mueller investigation. This is the largest single hoax ever perpetrated on a nation. Damn what a ship of fools we are to allow this crap to continue.

At what point does this investigation cease to exist? Every avenue of collusion has been explored and they keep coming back with “no evidence of collusion”. Since they don’t like the results, they’ve changed the criteria. Now it’s not about the election, it’s about any of President Trump’s business dealings with any Russian. Even deals made before he announced his candidacy. If you don’t like the results of the game, you can’t just change the rules.
