Tell Tennessee Lawmakers that Their Adoption Bills Harm Youth, LGBTQ Families

by GLAAD | 2.8.19

The Tennessee General Assembly this week introduced measures that would allow adoption agencies in the state to deny LGBTQ families the ability to adopt children by citing so-called “religious exemptions.”

Let’s face it, these measures represent state-sanctioned licenses to discriminate. In fact, the effort in Tennessee is part of a coordinated campaign across the country to turn back the progress LGBTQ people have made.

According to the Movement Advancement Project (MAP), about 160,000 LGBTQ people live in Tennessee with approximately 18.1% of LGBTQ couples raising children. We know fair-minded people of Tennessee will see right through this charade, but we must stop these destructive bills that would only harm our youth and LGBTQ families.

Sign this petition and tell Tennessee lawmakers to stop denying our youth from being accepted into loving homes. It’s time we put a stop to these attacks on LGBTQ Tennesseans once and for all!

children need homes and families and love. saying a child is better of parentless than with gay parents is crazy and cruel.

Children. Need. Loving. Families. It doesn't matter if it just so happens to be a same sex couple. Get these kids out of horrifying situations and into loving homes! That is the priority.

Love is love and trans rights are human rights. We all deserve an equal chance to raise a child and to be who we are.

Civil rights should not be superceded by religious beliefs and practices. Let them keep discrimination in their places of worship if they want but they should not be permitted to do so in the broader public square.

Gay men and women are just as suitable as parents as anyone else. Plus religion has nothing to do with the kind of family environment someone has to offer.

I signed this because I feel every child and teen deserves a love home no matter what. We have to many children in foster care and homeless and they are overlooked. These religious walls that you are creating is causing more harm than good LOVE IS LOVE let it be shared with everyone!

Transgender and gender-nonconforming (TGNC) children need validation and support on their journey toward self-discovery. Unfortunately, due to stigma and misinformation, these kids can be especially vulnerable to bullying, discrimination, and even mental health issues such as anxiety or depression. Find a more expansive way of understanding gender; gain insight into gender diverse thoughts, feelings, and experiences. There are other ways to guide the next generation of kids, without resorting to attempting to legislate your morality on others. Litterally 100s of books filled with engaging activities such as, “Apple, Oranges, and Fruit Bowls” and “Pronoun Town”. These tools can be harnessed to help your child to explore their own unique identity in a way that is age-appropriate and validating. No child experiences gender in a vacuum, and children don’t just transition—families do.
