Shutdown Countdown: 5 Days – Trump Lashes Out at Dems for ‘Brand New Demand’ in Border Security Talks

Do Democrats & Trump need to cut a deal on border security funding?

by Countable | Updated on 2.11.19

  • Congress has until February 15 to reach a budget agreement or face another partial government shutdown.
  • On January 25th, President Donald Trump made a deal with Democrats to end the 35-day partial government shutdown and reopen the government through February 15.
“Let me be very clear,” Trump said when announcing the temporary re-opening. “We really have no choice but to build a powerful wall or steel barrier. If we don't get a fair deal from Congress, the government either shutdown on Feb. 15 again, or I will use the powers afforded to me under the laws and the Constitution of the United States to address this emergency."

What’s the latest?

February 11, 2019

  • President Trump is accusing of Democrats of trying to derail border security talks by demanding a cap on the number of beds available for detained unauthorized immigrants.
"The Democrats do not want us to detain, or send back, criminal aliens! This is a brand new demand. Crazy!" Trump tweeted.
  • Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL), chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, told "Fox News Sunday":
  • "I think the talks are stalled right now. I'm hoping we can get off the dime later today or in the morning because time is ticking away. But we got some problems with the Democrats dealing with ICE, that is detaining criminals that come into the U.S., and they want a cap on them, we don't want a cap on that."

February 10, 2019

  • Border security talks have stalled, increasing the risks of another possible partial government shutdown.
  • Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL), chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, told "Fox News Sunday" that the odds of a deal are 50-50.
"I think the next 24 hours are crucial. We could close some deals, but they've got to be good, to secure our borders," Shelby said.
  • Meanwhile, President Trump tweeted Sunday morning:

What's the not-latest?

  • Vice President Mike Pence said Wednesday morning that he can’t guarantee there won’t be another shutdown next week.
  • "Now, we agreed to re-open the government for three weeks, because after talking to Democrats in the Senate and in the House we were told that they were willing to work with us. They were willing to fund a barrier at our southern border and to address the other priorities that the president laid out in that common-sense approach. We’ve taken them at their word," the vice president told CBS's Jeff Glor.
"The American people saw this president is absolutely determined to keep his word to secure our border and end the crisis of illegal immigration."

The majority of the population has made it clear- WE DO NOT WANT TO PAY FOR A WALL. We are in support of real border security, not an alteration of Trump’s farfetched “Mexico will pay for it” wall that 34% of the population think is a genius idea.

We can’t have another shutdown because study shows it will include more economic damage. Hey President Trump, if the Democrats give you a deal, then accept it even if it doesn’t include a wall. The Senate needs to also allow a vote on it regardless of Trump’s position. Rather than a wasteful and ineffective will, we could use other border security measures such as drones, etc.

Democrats and republicans need to make a deal that they like, with enough votes to overcome a trump veto. Congress is not behind a wall, only trump.

In case everybody forgot. trump couldn’t get his wall in the first two years he and republicans were in complete control. No one wants a wall but we all want border security. So no. If all he is going to do is throw a fit and demand something his own party won’t vote for then there is no deal to be had. Go ahead and shut the government down. Put hundreds of thousands out of work. Put our national security on the line. Make us all worse off and see how low you can get those approval ratings. Then watch us march.

IMHO, part of any “agreement” must be a fail-safe clause that specifically prohibits either side from using government shutdowns as a tool for any and all future negotiations of any kind. The”agreement” should specify immediate initiation of follow up negotiations which should be a requirement for this agreement to be implemented. There should be a specific negotiation schedule with steps and a specific date for initiating and completing such negotiations. The goal for such negotiations must have an end date beyond which no funding will be directed toward border security and the access of either legislative branch to government shutdowns as a negotiating tool will cease permanently, regardless of whether or not an agreement has been reached. All of these steps must be a part of the “agreement”, signed by all parties to the negotiations.

Trump doesn’t want the wall. He wants the issue. It’s a distraction from his legal problems, from his son’s legal problems, from his daughter’s and son-in-law’s legal problems. It diverts attention from how he is screwing the poor, farmers, middle class and blue collar, and just about everyone except the ultra wealthy.

Not only do we need to cut the political crap about the need for a wall we need to knock the political wall down. I seem to remember republicans knocking those for wanting some kind of sensible gun legislation showing even the slightest bit of compassion for those killed by GUNS. I ask which is it? Do you care about all lives of U.S.citizens or not?

No compromise on our homelands safety, no deal without concrete funding $5.7 billion at least for our wall/fence. If the Democrats won’t appropriate the money for our wall, Trump should tell them to go to hell! Build the wall! #MAGA

Trump is very determined to get this wall built. I'm sick and tired of seeing and hearing about this idiot. We don't need a wall. Honestly I don't think he's going to wait the 9 days. I think majority of us don't tolerate bullies or his tactics. He is the most corrupt person i've ever known of. NO WALL U IDIOT

NO DEAL FOR A USELESS WALL! #45 is once again threatening, bullying, and stomping his feet to get what he wants, (very much like a two year old child). His vitriol language to dehumanize the asylum seekers is right on par for his racism. The biggest terroristic threat in the U.S. right now is #45! 1. Separating families; (children and babies), placing them in cages; marching them outside for 20 minutes each day. #45 has caused irreparable emotional trauma to thousands of children/babies. 2. Taking 800,000 federal employees hostage; which he is threatening to do again. Dismissing those employees who live paycheck to paycheck, by lying. #45 said the federal employees supported his shutdown. 3. Tweeting and shouting that he will call for a National Emergency to build the monument to himself. There is NO national emergency, NO imminent threat at our Southern borders. Do not yield, No Wall!

It needs to be bipartisan which means Trump has to give Democrats something of value they want. There cannot be another shutdown over Trump’s wall. Democrats are for border security, but not for a useless wall. Border security consists of extending or repairing existing barriers. A wall is what Trump says he wants, but is up against because he’s a bigoted narcissistic egomaniac.

Democrats should not waste tax dollars on a vanity wall for the toddler POTUS. Do your job & provide a budget with proper border security provisions. Millions for defense but not one penny for tribute.

This is not the root cause in the problems of drugs, sex trafficking, kidnap, rape, murder or any other argument Trump can come up with. A wall in it of itself will have absolutely zero impact on these. Start asking ourselves why, who, what , where, why to all of these issue and you will soon learn that a wall will address absolutely none of them. Stop the grandstanding and party bullshit and do what is right for a change. So NO!!!

No! Trump needs to climb down from his wall battle and run the country like a country and not a business. He failed at business and is failing at government. Apparently he has never come across the old saying that those who do not learn their history are doomed to repeat it. And someone take away his copy of 1984!
