The Senate Judiciary Committee voted 12-10 on party lines Thursday to advance Trump’s attorney general nominee William Barr to a Senate floor vote, which could take place as soon as next week.
Why it matters: Many Democratic lawmakers were concerned Barr may not be the right person for the job heading up an embattled Department of Justice — he has said Trump did not obstruct justice by firing James Comey and has said Mueller should not be able to subpoena Trump over obstruction.

No to Barr! He will NOT allow us to see the FULL report from Mueller. Don’t kid yourself.
Barr's opinions which he has expressed regarding Comey's firing and the Mueller investigations powers show his bias and the obvious potential for conflict of interest if Barr becomes AG. Don't let this happen unless you are ok with pushing the handle that will flush American Democracy into the Swamp.
Good choice. Hopefully he will be able to get the DOJ back on track and rebuild their reputation.
Just another trump yes-man who seems to forget his roles is to uphold the rule of law no matter who the president is.
He’s a lot better than the corrupt unqualified puppet now occupying the position and probably the best we can expect from a corrupt president. Let’s hope he has at least an ounce of decency and some kind of moral compass.
The only reason I support this is because he is probably the best candidate we are going to get from President Trump. He will also said he will let Robert Mueller continue his investigation, where as some of the nominees Trump might nominate, if Barr doesn’t get approved, will shutdown the investigation all together.
Public opposition to such a truly partisan appointment to protect Trump will not be s surprise. It’s clear that party loyalty comes before country to the GOP. What’s sad is that protecting leadership is the priority.
No way. He wants to overturn Roe v Wade and is a proponent of the police state. Barr was the one that convinced Bush to pardon a number of key figures involved in the Iran-Contra scandal, including former Defense Secretary Caspar W. Weinberger. The scandal involved the illegal sale of arms to Iran and anti-government guerrillas in Nicaragua. Bush's decision to pardon Weinberger and others is often listed among the most controversial examples of the president exercising pardon power in US history. He has been vocally critical of the Mueller investigation, actively wanting to squash the probe. Additionally, Barr supported one of Trump's most criticized moves as president — the firing of FBI Director James Comey. Barr wrote an op-ed in 2017 stating Trump "made the right call." Trump has faced accusations of obstruction of justice over Comey's ousting. In a separate op-ed, Barr expressed approval of Trump's firing of Acting Attorney General Sally Yates after she refused to enforce the president's travel ban that targeted predominantly Muslim countries. Barr has also been critical of Mueller's team of prosecutors, questioning their political leanings. "I would have liked to see him have more balance on this group," Barr said on the subject last year. As attorney general, Barr would have the authority to fire Mueller. Not acceptable AT ALL
No more 45 sycophants!
TRUMP IS GOING TO PAY FOR HIS CRIMES. THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WILL SEE THE MUELLER REPORT IN ITS ENTIRETY, PERIOD
But what can we do, the Trump Administration has sought to appoint conflicted and inappropriate candidates to the cabinet and Federal bench that have not risen to the challenge of opposition to his malfeasance. As honorable as the current nominee maybe anyone attempting to advocate for judicial independence is fighting a losing battle against this Administration. Continue investigations and uncover the truth of the Administration’s malfeasance so the country may finally come to terms with the travesty that has been unleashed upon the country by this Administration.
I am opposed to anyone that can accept the degenerate lunatic in the White House.
He is trying to get rid of an investigation about him. This is abstraction of justice Please don’t approve Barr! Say NO to Barr!
Another swamp rat
I am very concerned about Barr's opinions on the presidency and the law. NO one is above the law! Crimes committed by the president should not have to wait until the term is completed for prosecution. Think how much more damage could be done?
Can you spell big fat CONFLICT OF INTEREST... another Trump swamp creature.
There goes virtually any chance of seeing the Mueller Investigation Report. He’s already laid the groundwork for it’s suppression in his confirmation hearing.
As with all if not most of Trump's nominees Barr is unfit to fill the role of Attorney General. It's so nice that instead of draining the swamp, Trump has filled it up to the brim with unqualified nominees.
He is tainted, for one. For another, Individual 1 is compromised and should not be allowed to choose his AG. Am I the only one who thinks this is just the craziest thing? Should a criminal choose his judge and jury?
There is enough support in this Administration for lying and cover up and misrepresentation.Let me also add that we don’t need anyone else who would allow the circumvention of governmental laws.
We have to stop putting people in charge of departments that their values and actions are against that departments purpose. Do not confirm barr.
