Reflections On Launching The Green New Deal

What are your thoughts about the Green New Deal?

by Green New Deal Action | 2.7.19

Last night, thousands of people across the country came together to talk about the Green New Deal - what it is, why it’s important, and what can be done to make it a reality.

The gatherings were organized by the Sunrise Movement, an youth-led organization dedicated to making Climate Change a top issue in the 2020 election and advocating for legislation modeled on the Green New Deal’s principals.

Here’s what we learned:

Things Are Moving Quickly

The Sunrise Movement was founded in the summer of 2017, less than two years ago. In that short time, it has:

  • Made Climate Change a must-talk-about issue in the 2018 midterms.
  • Got a diverse slate of candidates who support the Green New Deal elected to Congress.
  • Within the first month of this new Congress, legislation for a Green New Deal that deals with Climate Change in a meaningful way is being introduced.

It’s On To 2020

To keep up the momentum, the Sunrise Movement is hosting regular days of action and committing to a political strategy to make Climate Change one of the most talked-about issues in the 2020 election.

You Don’t Need To Be An Expert

Climate Change can seem confusing. Is it about weather? Can it truly be stopped? Does fighting Climate Change mean I need to stop driving my car?

All that really matters is that it concerns you. Climate Change isn’t just about the environment. It’s about our communities. It’s about our health. It’s about the jobs we have and the work we want.

In short, tackling Climate Change is about telling our stories about why taking action matters to us.

It could be that you have asthma and are worried what bad air quality that results from wildfires intensified by climate-change will do to your health.

It could be that your community houses a power plant and suffers from disproportionately high rates of cancer.

It could be that you can’t find good, high-paying jobs in your area because your state isn’t doing enough to harness the economic potential of renewable energy.

We are making progress because we are sharing why Climate Change is important to us, and why the Green New Deal is the best way to address it.
