Texas Rep. Farenthold Still Hasn't Paid $84K Back For Harassment Settlement

by Countable | 1.4.18

What’s the story?

Texas GOP Rep. Blake Farenthold, who promised to pay back $84K of taxpayer money used to settle a harassment case against him, has still not paid back the funds, reports CNN.

On December 4 Farenthold told a local, Texas TV station that he was going to pay back the funds within the week:

"I'm … going to hand a check over this week to probably Speaker Ryan or somebody and say, 'Look, here's the amount of my settlement. Give it back to the taxpayers. I want to be clear that I didn't do anything wrong, but I also don't want the taxpayers to be on the hook for this.'"

Now an aide in his office has stated the congressman is, "waiting to see what changes the House will make to the Congressional Accountability Act before repaying those funds."

Speaker Paul Ryan’s office has stated that they still expect Farenthold to pay back the funds.

Farenthold announced in mid-December that he would not seek re-election at the end of his current term in response to widening harassment allegations against him.

What do you think?

Should Rep. Farenthold repay the funds immediately, or be allowed to wait?

Garnish his wages and add a fine for not paying, this is what would happen to regular citizens.

The question is why were taxpayer funds used for harassment settlements instead of it being a personal responsibility. These people should gratefully repay the funds, then resign. These ethical and moral violations are grounds for losing their positions. The wasteful spending of taxpayer revenue must stop.

Really. I truly hope he's going to be penalized with fines and interest. How about we the taxpayers garnish his wages until the debt is paid. Here's a fun fact folks, in 2014, Rep. Farenthold's net worth was $6.6 million. Time to pay the piper you lowlife, swamp dweller. Say goodbye to your career in politics. You truly belong to the Gross Old Pervert party.

What about resigning? Isn’t that what has become expected in these cases? Also, about this Federal slush fund that pays off victims, I don’t need to know the victims identity however, since the fund is backed with taxpayers money, I want full disclosure from every elected official involved in a settlement along with their resignation. LETS REALLY DRAIN THE SWAMP!

Have the IRS put a lien on the salary WE pay until the money is paid back in full plus interest -- at the current IRS rate and from the date the funds were inappropriately used for this disgusting payoff. Paying back the $84K is not enough to send a message to the rest of his corrupt cronies. This behavior is not acceptable to the citizens. If this had come to light sooner, the reaction from the public would have been the same. Thanks to the good-old-boys club we have allowed to develop in DC, they have kept this grossly negligent use of our money a secret. It is past time to break the cycle.

Hey why are you paying harassment hush money with my tax money. Get the 84000.00 bribe he paid back. I am a working stiff and they would garnish my wages if I didn’t pay.

Rep. Farenthold and everyone else who used tax payer money to settle their harassment and other cases, need to reimburse us now.

Termination is likely appropriate in this situation. He stole taxpayer money and used his office to unethically use the funds. He should also have to perform community service at minimum wage and pay back with 27% interest, until everything done has been reimbursed. Let’s see how long it takes him and how he enjoys his days.

Another special person exempt from common sense rules. You pay what you own or get out. Why hasn’t he been forced to resign?

He should be made to remit payment immediately and forced to resign. This is misappropriation of funds and a crime. Shame on ALL members of the House of Representatives for not enforcing accountability of their membership. NO ONE is above the law. This is a crime.

There seems to be at least two sets of laws. One for the wealthy and entitled and one for working Americans. Congressional members need to pay/reimburse as charged. Trey Gowdy admitted to altering documents in the Benghazi investigation. Why is he still in office? Why hasn’t he been forced to pay the costly and corrupt investigation? Congress needs to clean house, police each other and pay consequences in jail or monetarily as appropriate.
