Trump Hosts British Prime Minister and More In Politics Today

by Countable | 3.20.17

It’s difficult to stay up-to-date on what’s happening in this country and to break through the clutter, so we’re here to make it easier. Here’s what we at Countable are reading today:

1. "Churchill bust takes center stage as Trump, May reaffirm special relationship"

"President Trump, in his first meeting with British Prime Minister Theresa May Friday, pledged his “lasting support" to the historic relationship between the U.S. and the U.K., and called an independent Britain a “blessing to the world.””

"During what was also Trump’s first meeting with a foreign leader, the pair posed in the Oval Office in front of a bust of Winston Churchill – a possible metaphor for how the Trump administration sees the relationship between the two countries as critical to its foreign policy."

2. "March for Life: Pence speaks as thousands assemble at Washington Monument"

"Thousands of abortion opponents gathered in cold, blustery weather near the Washington Monument Friday and heard Vice President Mike Pence tell the annual March for Life that the Trump administration is determined to advance the fight against abortion."

"The massive crowd, bearing flags, banners and placards, then flowed down Constitution Avenue, filling the street, and rallied at the Supreme Court building across from the Capitol."

3. "GOP lawmakers voice concern about ObamaCare repeal: report"

"Congressional Republicans voiced concerns behind closed doors Thursday that the rapid-fire effort to repeal and replace ObamaCare might not work as smoothly as GOP leaders claim, The Washington Post reports."

"Citing a recording of a meeting it obtained, the Post reported that several GOP lawmakers questioned the mechanism with which they intend to dismantle former President Obama’s signature healthcare law, as well as their own plans to pass a new healthcare bill."

4. "UN Ambassador Nikki Haley at UN: ‘We’re taking names’"

"Nikki Haley, the new US ambassador to the United Nations, walked into UN headquarters for the first time Friday and promptly said, "For those who don't have our backs, we're taking names.""

"Haley told reporters, "Our goal with the administration is to show value at the UN, and the way to show value is to show our strength, show our full voice. Have the backs of our allies and make sure our allies have our backs as well.""

5. "New Baylor lawsuit cites 52 rapes by football players in 4 years, amid ‘show ‘em a good time’ culture"

"A Baylor University graduate who says she was raped by two football players in 2013 sued the university Friday. Her lawsuit includes an allegation that 31 Baylor football players committed 52 acts of rape, including five gang rapes, between 2011 and 2014 -- an estimate that far exceeds the number previously provided by school regents."

"The woman, identified in the suit as Elizabeth Doe, reports being brutally gang raped by then-Baylor football players Tre'Von Armstead and Shamycheal Chatman after a party on April 18, 2013."

Pence and Trump have no right to strip women of our rights. Millions marched for the right to choose. Only thousands marched anti. Help us save Planned Parenthood

Senators and Representatives- please stop looking at party and look at the man and his actions. Muzzling the press-isn't that a 1st Amendment right? Disposing of whatever doesn't fit his ideals with a sweep of a pen? Saying something clearly that everyone hears or sees or a tweet - and then going to the CIA and saying he fully supports them. Please stand up against this man. I have never been so frightened when any other President took control as I am now. And I know I'm not the only one.

Donald Trump and Brexit - the two biggest blunders in recent history. America and the U.K. should take heed and learn from our mistakes, by sending Trump and Theresa May back to the out-of-touch cocktail parties that they came from.

These people are not "pro-life," they are pro-birth. After that, they couldn't care less about what happens to a human being. Congress must fight Führer Trump to keep the ACA in place until a suitable replacement is in place.

Maybe the GOP should stop dismantling the ACA and just start looking for ways to make it better. Stop being afraid to ask the rich to share a little wealth to those in need.

It is distasteful that the president stands before the bust of Churchill for a photo op when he plans to cut funding for the National Endowment for the Arts. Churchill stated in 1938, "the arts are essential to any complete national life. The State owes it to itself to sustain and encourage them….Ill fares the race which fails to salute the arts with the reverence and delight which are their due." Without the arts, we have no way of making our past and our present make sense. Without the arts, we wouldn't even have a national anthem (poetry, music), a capitol building (architecture), presidential portraits (painting), busts of our founding fathers (sculpture), war memorials (architecture, sculpture, design), or, really anything that symbolizes this nation.

Sirs, do you support Senators McCain the bipartisan group of senators who have introduced sweeping legislation designed to go beyond the punishments against Russia already levied by Obama, and to demonstrate to trump that forcefully responding to Moscow's meddling isn't a partisan issue, or one that US citizens are not interested in. Since the Republican president trump refuses to shed light on his dealings and other "activities" with the Russians, it is imperative to build a firewall between the USA and Russia to defend us from Russian cyber war and policy attacks. Why are we threatening a neighbor and friend, Mexico, with a wall (not to mention who will pay for this) instead of talking to them to address our immigration concerns, and not building a cyber, policy, and defensive firewall against a country and leader who has continually showed disregard for the USA, and the world, outside of Russia?

Please pay attention. We are being made a laughing stock by trump's lack of diplomacy and dearth of knowledge. Theresa May appeared sophisticated and adult compared to our Russian backed president.

Mnuchin, Tillerson, DeVos, Sessions, Pudzer, Price are not good choices for our future. We need intelligent, fair, experienced professionals in these vital positions. People whose past experiences & history show them to be qualified. Just say NO to these absurdly inappropriate nominations! What VP Pence said at the abortion rally is pure nonsense. He's as unhinged as Trump. It's a must that the Republican Legislators keep a thumb on the the President & VP to stop them from embarrassing the US. It's horrific that these liars are in the country's highest offices.

This awful action that we are banning refugees, the very ones who still think we are the leading human rights advocates is just beyond everything . Cutting the funding for the planned parenthood and generally making abortion so difficult to obtain is only hurting the very poor, usually young women mr trump amongst other people pledged to serve and protect. Stripping the obama care and not having anything to replace it is not looking after us, as he promised . Building the wall and having us to pay for it , having a row with Mexicans is not helping us. Please can you help us to repeal these awful actions . This is hurting America and its people .

The right to choose whether or not to reproduce is up to the individual who's body it takes place in. I'm sorry but it's more than just religion impeding on government but also blatant and utter denial of SCIENCE. These actions oppress women of all backgrounds and faiths. Science is not a "liberal conspiracy", representative Cory Booker and Robert Menendez oppose all actions impeding on reproductive rights now!
