It’s difficult to stay up-to-date on what’s happening in this country and to break through the clutter, so we’re here to make it easier. Here’s what we at Countable are reading today:
1. "Dow Jones passes 20,000 milestone for first time"
"Wall Street stock markets hit a fresh record on Wednesday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average trading above 20,000 for the first time. The S&P 500 and tech-heavy Nasdaq were also at new highs, fuelled by hopes that President Donald Trump's policies will boost the US economy."
"If the Dow finishes above 20,000, it will have reached its latest 1,000-point milestone two months after closing above 19,000 and be the second quickest 1,000 point rise ever. Financial stocks have been a major factor in the gain - with Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan accounting for around 20% of it. This is because investors believe that some of Mr Trump's policies will trigger inflation and produce a rise in interest rates."

2. "Trump signs directive to start border wall with Mexico, ramp up immigration enforcement"
"President Trump signed a pair of executive actions Wednesday to begin ramping up immigration enforcement, including a new border wall with Mexico, vowing that construction on his chief campaign pledge would begin in months. In an appearance at the Department of Homeland Security, Trump kicked off the rollout of a series of directives aimed at clamping down on the estimated 11 million immigrants living illegally in the United States."
"Aides said more directives could come later this week, including new restrictions on refugees and immigrants from Muslim-majority countries. The presidential directives signed Wednesday aim to create more detention centers, add more federal border control agents and withhold federal funds to cities that do not comply with federal immigration laws, Trump aides said. 3. "Trump cabinet nominee Steven Mnuchin is also registered to vote in two states"
"Donald Trump's nominee to head the Treasury department, Steven Mnuchin, is registered to vote in two states, a CNN KFile review of paperwork obtained through open records requests in New York and California show."
"While it is illegal to cast ballots in multiple states, it is not illegal to be registered in two states at the same time. In a tweet Wednesday, the president called for an investigation into voter fraud, including whether citizens are registered to vote in two states."

4. "Schumer emerges as new champion to left"
"Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) has emerged as a champion of the left since the election, embracing stalwart liberal Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and taking the lead in fighting President Trump’s conservative Cabinet selections. The minority leader has seized the mantle as the party’s chief defender of ObamaCare, twisting Trump’s campaign message to coin a new Democratic slogan to describe GOP healthcare policies: “Make America Sick Again."”
"The 66-year-old senator dismissed Trump’s recent executive order on ObamaCare as meaningless and has told Democratic colleagues he will not help Republicans pass legislation to replace the law if they repeal it unilaterally under a special budgetary process known as reconciliation. It’s a marked change in tone compared to November of 2014, when Schumer criticized the decision to prioritize the Affordable Care Act ahead of economic issues that lingered in the wake of the 2009 stimulus law."

5. "Trump says US should fight 'fire with fire' with terrorism"
"President Donald Trump says that he believes torture works, saying that “we have to fight fire with fire." In an interview with ABC News, the president says he will confer with Defense Secretary James Mattis and CIA director Mike Pompeo to determine what can and cannot be done legally to combat the spread of radicalism.”
"He says that radical groups “chop off the citizens' or anybody's heads in the Middle East, because they're Christian or Muslim or anything else." Adding, “we have that and we're not allowed to do anything. We're not playing on an even field.””
