Trump Announces Deal to Lift Shutdown for Three Weeks

How do you feel about the temporary re-open?

by Countable | Updated on 1.25.19

  • President Donald Trump has announced the partial shutdown will be lifted temporarily amid continuing talks to fund the government.
  • Trump said he'd made a deal with Democrats to end the shutdown and reopen the government through Februrary 15.
  • The temporary measure will allow federal workers to resume being paid.
"I will make sure that all employees receive their back pay very quickly or as soon as possible. It'll happen fast," Trump said.
  • The president said the deal doesn't include money for a border wall, but a bipartisan panel will work on a border security package.
  • Trump added that he has a "very powerful alternative" to fund the border wall, but he's "not going to use it." This is an apparent reference to Trump's claims that he'll declare a national emergency to get his wall funded.
"So, let me be very clear: We really have no choice but to build a powerful wall or steel barrier," Trump said. "If we don't get a fair deal from Congress, the government either shutdown on Feb. 15 again, or I will use the powers afforded to me under the laws and the Constitution of the United States to address this emergency."

This breaking news story will be updated.

Trump held the nation hostage and now he just capitulates. His speech was just more lies, the only thing that comes out of his mouth. He needs to be impeached so that Putin won’t succeed in destroying our great nation. The painful reality is that our president is compromised and every American is at risk.

He had this opportunity weeks ago. Instead he and the GOP allowed American workers and businesses to suffer. Open it fully and stop holding public servants hostage. He’s opening it to get his state of the union speech in and then will close it again.

I would prefer the government be reopened fully. Trump has already showed he is willing to shutdown the government & hold federal government workers paychecks hostage to try to force the US to give him what he wants. What will stop him from doing that again?

Trump doesn't care about the American people; his ego cares about Donald Trump. A friend of mine (an officer in the Navy) said this -- and he is NOT a liberal nor a Democrat: "I just approved the Voluntary Recall to Active Duty request for one of my Sailors. She’s a scientist for the EPA in her regular job, and a Fleet Marine Force-qualified corpsman (medic) in the Navy Reserve. We talked briefly on the phone just now: “I’m tired of being unemployed, sir. My family has a mortgage to pay and kids to feed. I’m willing to do dangerous work in order to earn the money we need. Please let me go, sir.” She’s off to do difficult work in a dangerous part of the world, in order to bring in a paycheck. I wish her the best with everything I have." This all because of a wall Mexico isn't paying for to solve a problem that won't be fixed with a wall. Fund the government. Figure out border security in other ways.

I ask you to reject this short term funding bill. This was asked for weeks ago only after letting people suffer. The only deal that is acceptable is to freely open the government perminately. The president had his chance at this offer he turned it down. Don’t give it to him now.

Why is he not listening the American people don’t want his racist wall that he insisted that Mexico would pay for. Put this madness to bed and get the government up and running and those folks who are struggling back to work.

A temporary reprieve on the heels of Stones arrest and the airport traffic cascading collapse. He’s trying to change the media narrative to avoid the consequences of his stupidity. He desperately wants to give the SOTUA and lift his poll numbers. This is a farce.

So Trump thinks closing the government and inflicting harm on over 8000,000 people is leverage and a good negotiating technique? What a fool he is. We are right back where we were 35 days ago. This unpatriotic idiot must be stopped. And he threatens to declare an emergency to close the government again if he doesn’t get HIS WALL after a temporary reopening of the government. Congress needs to stand up to this dictator and do the right thing. Fund specific improvements to border security based on specific budget requests but do not add 5 billion to an already debt of over a trillion dollars due to the tax scam.

You notice the President is the only one willing to cooperate. The dems are only about obstruction. The wall is going to be built and as of right now the President is the only one who cares for what is best for America. Pelosi and Schumer are playing political games. Protect our borders and our country!

The 800,000 hostages should be 100% free from worry that #45 will use them again as bait in order to get taxpayer monies for his Useless Wall, (UW). #45’s reassurance that backpay and paychecks will happen “very quickly”, cannot be accepted as truth. I have confidence that the U.S. Treasury will work diligently to ensure the 800,000 federal employees are compensated quickly; no thanks to the Bozo-on-Chief. This whole fiasco should show all Americans how weak #45 is as leader of our country. It is because of #45 ego and vanity, the chaos of the last 35 days will undoubtedly go down in our history as huge underwear stain. #45 has created an enormous stress in the lives of all Americans, especially those 800,000 federal employees and their families. All this strive, chaos, and uncertainty occurred because #45 wishes to build a UW to protect the U.S. from a NONEXISTENT threat.

I thank Trump for standing up for us through the longest shutdown in history! Nacey and Chuck caused this lengthy shutdown by sticking to a single word. No... Fake media doesn't report on trump's 35 days of hard work through Christmas, new year's, and MLK day on this. So I understand why Trump is making this first step. #Trump2020

This is Trumps doing. Temporarily is not the answer that is needed. As a rule the president' duty isn't to hold hostage 800,00 workers till you personally get what the president. Just more childish actions by an unhinged president.

While I am no way supportive of a wall, I am so glad people are going to get paid, this being said it shouldn’t reoccur in three weeks. That will push people’s security in this nation to the edge.

Glad to see government reopen. On edge about what will happen in twenty one days. Do not support any new physical barriers. The future is in technology.

He’s an idiot and shutting the government down is not a negotiating tactic. Peoples lives are not bargaining chips. That goes for every republican who voted against reopening and/or refused to even do their job, SENATE.
