Rep. King Condemned for Racist Remarks – Is Calling for His Removal Ignoring the Voters Who Re-Elected Him?

Is calling for King’s removal ignoring the will of the people?

by Countable | Updated on 1.16.19

What’s the story?

  • The House on Tuesday formally rejected Rep. Steve King’s (R-IA) remarks questioning why “white supremacist” and “white nationalist” is controversial language. The vote was near-unanimous, and the Republican Party has also stripped the hardline politician of his committee assignments.
  • Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said King should look for another job.
“Rep. King’s statements are unwelcome and unworthy of his elected position," McConnell said. "If he doesn’t understand why ‘white supremacy’ is offensive, he should find another line of work."
  • While various politicians and papers continue to call on King to step down, Iowa voters were aware of King’s nationalist ideology, racially offensive comments, and ties to white supremacist organizations in November 2018—and re-elected him into office during the midterms. Though King’s comments may be offensive to some, they are protected free speech and not against the law.
  • Is calling for King’s removal ignoring the will of the people?
  • Or as Countable user Roger wrote:
“Politicians should be allowed to say whatever they want and voters have the responsibility to act at election time.”

What did King say?

  • "White nationalist, white supremacist, Western civilization - how did that language become offensive?" King said in the New York Times interview. "Why did I sit in classes teaching me about the merits of our history and our civilization?"
  • King later walked back his comments saying: "I want to make one thing abundantly clear: I reject those labels and the evil ideology that they define.”

What is the Countable community saying?

“Rep King is NOT A RACIST! He was speaking of NATIONALISM. Pride in your country, its founders, its laws, its heritage, its people. ALL of its people! There is NO White Supremacy and has not been for decades. Move on people.” -Kathy
“Anything that has to do with hate needs to be swatted. Doesn’t matter if they are Democrat or Republican if you spout hate or support hate you need to go.” -Jeffery
“What’s wrong with what Rep. King said? He absolutely had a right to say it, and yes, snowflakes have an absolute right to be offended.” -RedPill
“Racists and bigots have no business in government because government is there to serve ALL the people, not just those they like.” -Todd
“freedom of speech is freedom of speech, end of story.” -Brian
“Let free speech ring! His constituents will correct him or vote him out if they disagree.” -Bill
“Thank you for standing up and speaking out against any racist member of Congress. Enacting Hate laws in The USA is a priority. We as a Nation need to embrace diversity and our Members of Congress must be Leaders and Role Models in this endeavor. We are stronger together wherever we are from.” -Lisa

What do you think?

Should Congress censure Rep. King? Or is up to his constituents correct him and vote him out? Take action and tell your reps, then share your thoughts below.

He is a Representative of the United States. He is a Racist. It is not possible to Represent people, if you do not perceive or believe some specific people to even be human beings. Just like you cannot put a known racist on a jury to hear trial concerning minorities.

If his ilk would let minorities vote, he would not have been re-elected.

They can vote him out, but if you remove him, you have to remove Rashida Tlaib, who endorses anti-Semites & makes anti-Semitic comments herself. But the Left ignores it because she’s a minority & they don’t care about cleaning their own house. Don’t condemn King.. racist. Condemn King.. racist. Rashida Tlaib..? Superstar strong woman!

Freedom of speech is freedom of speech. If his constituents are unhappy with his comments, then they can vote him out in the next election.

There is no place in our government for people who do NOT represent ALL AMERICANS. This kind of rhetoric is NOT REPRESENTATIVE OF 75% of Americans. He probably would NOT have gotten elected if there hadn’t been voter suppression. That is also UNAMERICAN.

Those who say no are all hypocritical because this was a very argument against President Obama and is now pointing at King and Trump. The will of the people had spoken and those people were elected, that should be enough for the rest of us. We may not agree but in the end, the electorate will take care of its own, but not by those who are outside their constituencies.

Leftists love to accuse racism, it’s their favorite pastime, unless it’s a member of their own party. King attempted to clarify his comment, but the leftist media is not giving up their charge. How about that anti Semite Rashida Tlaib? Why no cry to remove her? Hypocrites.

This man is proud of western civilization. I’ve been watching past videos and tweets, this man was taken totally out of context, but what do you expect from leftist mainstream media and democrats.

I don’t understand something.? If a Black like Maxine Waters make an off color remark, no one says a word. But let white man say something that some people a remark the same way and they want to hang him. What is going on in this country now! Why don’t you all just do what we sent you to Washington to do, keep this country running. If you ask me, you are not doing a very good job at it. Quit blaming President Trump for your short comings.--

Well its definitely problematic but our Reps should have freedom of speech too. Is the House going to condemn the new Congresswoman from Michigan who called Trump a mother f**ker and has said racist things against Jews and who hangs out with Hezbollah terrorists? If condemnation is to happen, let's be "equal" in regards to our condemnations. In other words, not just condemn Repubs but condemn Dems too. Fair is fair.

Of course it’s ignoring the will of the People to remove Representative King but now that our House in D.C. is Controlled by these venomous vipers called Democrats truth and facts no longer matter it’s all about race-hustling and stirring up hateful emotions against those that does not agree with their American hating twisted immoral views! Something must be done to stop this obvious Saul Alinsky coup that’s out to destroy the America we grew up to Love!

No, it’s not ignoring them. It’s shedding light on new behavior that is unacceptable considering his position. In all cases, voters need to be more demanding of their representatives. No reason we need to put up with this. Find a better quality person to hold office. Stop settling for this.

Congressman King represents all the constituents of his district, as do all Congressmen and women, regardless of party. You may be elected by a majority who have a given point of view, but it is statistically impossible that everyone in a Congressional district has that one point of view. Once elected, the needs and wishes of all the constituents should matter. White supremacy, and nationalism as defined by white supremacists, is inherently discriminatory, and has no place in a nation of diversity, as is the United States of America. We are a nation of immigrants: unless you are Native American, at some point in your family’s past, everyone came from somewhere else. And many of those people came from non-white backgrounds. This is a basic national fact, and has been one of our greatest strengths, because it has usually taken considerable effort, drive, will to succeed, and willingness to try something new to get here, and to become part of the society. That drive, strength, and determination to make a better life has also made a better country. The white supremacy outlook works in direct opposition to that benefit of diversity, and puts people down instead of continuing to build the country up. We need to work together, here and in the rest of the world, to solve big problems. . . not add to them.

Go ahead and open that door! Let everyone decide to fire him so we can all do the same to Pelosi, Waters, Brown, Schumer ad nauseam. Constituents be damned, let we the people have at ‘em. Lets just purge the crap we’re burdened with right now and start over.
