Shutdown News: Should Trump Be Allowed to Give a State of the Union Address?

Should Trump Be Allowed to Give a State of the Union Address?

by Countable | Updated on 1.16.19

What's the latest?

  • Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has asked President Donald Trump to reschedule his State of the Union Address or deliver it in writing to Congress if the government remains shut down.
"Sadly, given the security concerns and unless government re-opens this week, I suggest that we work together to determine another suitable date after government has re-opened for this address or for you to consider delivering your State of the Union address in writing to the Congress on January 29th," Pelosi wrote in a letter to Trump Wednesday.
  • “And since the start of modern budgeting in Fiscal Year 1977, a State of the Union address has never been delivered during a government shutdown,” wrote the speaker.
  • “He can make it from the Oval Office if he wants,” Pelosi later told reporters.
  • Pelosi also clarified that she wasn’t disinviting Trump.
“It’s on the strength of the statement of the secretary of Homeland Security about all of the resources that are needed to prepare for a State of the Union Address, which she calls an event of special security,” Pelosi said. “And ... these people are not working.”
  • The White House has not yet responded.

The State of the Shutdown: January 16

  • Wednesday, January 16, marks the 26th day of the partial government shutdown.
  • Congress and the White House are trying to broker a deal after the House passed a continuing resolution (CR) on December 20th that included $5.7 billion for border security ― including wall construction ― and $7.8 billion in disaster relief along party-lines. It lacked the votes to advance in the Senate, as have bills passed in January by the Democrat-controlled House since the new Congress convened.
  • Approximately 800,000 federal workers won't receive their paychecks because of the budget impasse.
  • Seven departments have been affected, including Homeland Security, Justice, Housing, Agriculture, Commerce, Interior, and the Treasury.
  • Sections of Joshua Tree National Park, Yosemite National Park, and much of Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks are closed. People are reporting longer lines at airports due to short staffing at Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints. Other impacts of the shutdown include Smithsonian museums shuttering and various federal agencies putting loan applications on hold. And Native American tribes who receive substantial federal funding are struggling.

Trump is required by the Constitution to deliver a State of the Union message to Congress. The Constitution does not specify what form this is to take. Trump has seen fit to jeopardize the security of the United States by furloughing and refusing to pay the Secret Service, the Coast Guard, the Border Patrol, TSA, and other security services. Due to this, adequate security cannot be assured for Trump to provide a verbal presentation to an entire gathering of Congress. He can return to past practice and submit his report to Congress in writing.

Anything I say at this point about Trump will be filled with such profanity that I would embarrass myself. Can we jump to impeach him YET?

Interesting that I voted "yes" on this but that was only to directly address the question as posed. I don't think he should be "prevented" from the State of the Union address. However, I think this address needs to be changed...in fact restored...back to its original purpose. The Executive branch of our government is Constitutionally obligated to address the Legislature (see Article II). However, since this started being broadcast, first by radio and then by TV, to the public, it is no longer about the Executive branch addressing the Legislature, but has instead become a platform for politicking to the populace which I see no value in doing. In my opinion, he should continue to do the SotU address, but it should not be televised or broadcast. In fact, if we make the contents of this address available to the public, it should be done as a summary by a non-partisan group who can remove any and all rhetoric and merely report the practical information shared before Congress. Hopefully, that will lead to less politicking and make this address useful again.

Only if they air it on a delay to give one non-partisan organization time to properly fact check him. Require every outlet even conservative ones like Fox News air the fact checked broadcast.

We don’t need the divider and thief to spew anymore propaganda, hate or lies. All he will do is use a state of the union address to blame democrats for the shutdown which we all know is an outright lie. Shit for brain needs a wake up call from his own party, calling him out for his manufactured crisis on the border. We the people demand the GOP to act in the best interest of all people not just the orange tyrant residing in the White House. I know you feel you don’t work for or answer too we the people and only have to answer to your corporate donors. History will remember you poorly, by the policies you’ve backed, along with how you treated our citizens.

Why does the left always have to belittle someone to make themselves feel better? When asked a question, they simply resort to whiny tantrums and name calling. He’s your president, whether you want to admit that or not. If you don’t like it, go live somewhere else. I don’t think that delaying the SOTU is in America’s best interest. What are the democrats afraid of Americans hearing? Not only that, but even though service members aren’t “technically” being paid, they are still required to do their jobs. I should know, my brother is a Marine. He isn’t sitting around twiddling his thumbs... he and his battalion are preparing for upcoming events.

Pretty middle of the road (usually leaning left on most issues), but I got to disagree with Pelosi here. Security is going to be the same as usual, they do this all the time. Despite whether or not you support the president, the absence or delay of a State of the Union Address will show a lot of weakness to other-than-friendly nations of the United States. Nanci should, in fact, praise the idea hoping for Trump to put his foot in his mouth. Speeches from the rich and the powerful historically go terribly when their citizens are in distress. Other than that, House/Senate are still getting paid. If that means sitting through a boring speech, so be it. It's your job.

Unless the partial government shutdown resolves by the end this week, no, #45 should not give or even submit a written State of the Union. Someone who is holding over 800,000 federal employees hostage, has no business speaking about the state of our country. It was tallied in early November 2018, that #45 had told over 6,420 lies in 649 days. That is an astonishing 9 lies a day. Why would Americans want to hear an hour and twenty minutes from a man who has no compassion for the average American who is not getting paid? Why would Americans want to hear from a bully, from someone who just cannot tell the truth, who does not knows what the word ‘honor’ means? Therefore, NO, he has no right to deliver (verbally or in writing), the SOTU!

Pelosi should try to end the shutdown now by negotiating. Trump should take all of them to the border for the negotiations. Might change their minds.

There is no good reason to not give the SOTU address. Pelosi has no place making these demands. She’s crossing the lines of her authority. Trump is president and he should give it.

Nancy needs to shut up. The State of the Union is not good. Too many obstructionists obstructing simply because Hillary lost. It’s not a good look.

Absolutely NOT! Do not give this asshole a forum! He thrives on being the center of attention - even if he makes a complete asshole of himself! He has NOTHING to say that I want to hear - for over two years now. News media, you created this monster by not fact checking him and his minions, when you had the opportunity. Instead, you allowed him, Sarah poophead, KellyAnne shithole and so many others, to spew their “alternate facts,” a/k/a downright lies, without having the balls to call them out! All for ratings! Enough of this shit! Stand up to them and their lies. Be REAL reporters, for a change! People, I am afraid a revolution is the only way we’re going to get our country out of the throws of this creature they elected President. McConnell will not do his job and should be IMPEACHED IMMEDIATELY! This outrageous behavior CANNOT be sustained indefinitely!
