Data: Bureau of Labor Statistics; Chart: Axios Visuals
The economy added 312,000 jobs in December, topping the 180,000 that economists were expecting, while the unemployment rate ticked up to 3.9%, the Labor Department said on Friday.
Why it matters: The final jobs report of 2018 saw even stronger wage growth and increased workforce participation. Both were previously missing factors that have puzzled economists with such a strong labor market.
Payrolls in November were revised higher to 176,000 from 155,000 and in October to 274,000 from 237,000.
What they're saying: "December’s strong performance quells any lingering feelings that a hiring plateau might have occurred from the impact of tariffs and recent market volatility," Steve Rick, chief economist at CUNA Mutual Group said.
The bottom line: This is an all-around strong jobs report and while it may calm concerns about the health of the economy, the backward-looking report says nothing about what will happen next year.

Virginia, you are beyond belief. The Swamp has increased by leaps and bounds with the Idiot Pig in charge. Don’t know what universe you live in!
Well that was the Christmas temp jobs. Let’s see how January fares out after the return items end for all these jobs. I see you say pay increased, well I didn’t see that except my insurance went up, so did my internet and water bill.
Thank u Mr. President u have drained some of the swamp. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Wages are stagnant and low. Stock market a wreck. trump’s doing everything he can to destroy our nation and our democracy- sadly GOP is aiding and abetting trump’s corrupt criminal treasonous regime.
🤗 DECEMBER 2019 LABOR STATISTICS 🤗 THANK YOU 🙏🏻 🙏🏻🙏🏻 PRESIDENT TRUMP The economy added 312,000 jobs in December, topping the 180,000 that economists were expecting, while the unemployment rate ticked up to 3.9%, the Labor Department reported. The final jobs report of 2018 saw even stronger wage growth and increased workforce participation. Both were previously missing factors that have puzzled economists with such a strong labor market. * Payrolls in November were revised higher to 176,000 from 155,000 and in October to 274,000 from 237,000. * A total of 2.6 million jobs were added in 2018 — the best showing since 2015. This is an all-around strong jobs report and while it may calm concerns about the health of the economy, the backward-looking report says nothing about what will happen next year. SneakyPete..... 👍🏻🙏🏻👍🏻🙏🏻👍🏻. 1*4*19.....
Doesn’t count the 800,000 furloughed federal employees.
That’s good and everything, but in reality, that means nothing when wages have been stagnant in the past 10 years. Until the price of food goes down or gas becomes cheaper, you can claim the economy is rebounding but it is slowly crumbling under the assumption it is better nationally. Locally, a much different story.
Employers added the most workers in 10 months, wage gains accelerated and labor-force participation jumped. Now, if we can shut down the anti-Trump Fed, we can keep this going. To the leftists here, if you've gotten a job, bonus, or raise under President Trump, have the integrity to admit it.
“THE 2019 DEMOCRATIC “CRASH & BURN” TOWARDS 2020” What’s also going to be interesting is seeing on how many Democratic Senators will be retiring or resigning during the election cycle, creating the opportunity of the Republicans picking up additional seats following the 2020 election cycle based on the recurring Democratic Party’s poor performance now until the 2020 elections. Just a curious thought. SneakyPete..... 🙀🤔🤔🙀. 1*4*19.....
President Trump keeps on winning! More jobs and higher average wages for everyone. You’d have to be a fool not to re-elect Trump in 2020. Even far left Axios has to give props to the Trump administration. Average wage is $62,175 in 2018 up from $57,617 in 2016 during the Obama admin. That’s a big increase in average wages. A lot of people on the left here are stating that wages are stagnant which is obviously a lie.
Thank you Mr. President!
Hey Glowurm, if you are going to troll Virginia for her comment, how about presenting some facts to back up yours. Who is acting like an “idiot pig?” That would be you. Go back to Facebook.
Don’t get too excited. The shutdown & seasonal jobs will end soon. Where are the infrastructure jobs Trump promised??
This would not happen under Obama or your Leftie dream boat Hillary! Gas here in Wisconsin is almost $1.80 a gallon! Yep! That’s right! So when all you Leftie crybabies go to gas up just remember who got it down there for the working middle class! Oh Yeah before I forget! I’m a proud Vet and also work in the American Steel Industry! We were working and orders are coming in so fast because We Produce Quality not Quantity BS like the Communist Chinese! Remember that!
This latest report looks great. This doesn't serve as an excuse for Trump's authoritarian style leadership. This report only encourages Trump's holier than thou I only I attitude. Is it good that we have a good job report? Yes. Does that give Trump a green light for his criminal actions? No!
Guess trump isn’t as bad as cnn and msnbc say.
Good news. Thanks President Trump
Everybody’s saying thanks to trump while ignoring the fact we have had non-stop job growth for the past 8 years
President is doing a great job
Trump is the greatest president we will ever live to see.
