In an off-year upset, the Democratic contender won the race to fill the Senate seat of now-Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Lawyer Doug Jones will be the first Democrat to represent the deeply Republican state of Alabama in more than a quarter century. Jones will now serve the remainder of Sessions' term, facing reelection in 2020.
The Republican candidate, former judge Roy S. Moore, faced criticism for allegations that he dated teenage girls when he was in his 30s. That, plus his unorthodox decisions as a judge, which twice lead to his unseating from the bench, put significant drag on Moore's campaign.
The election of Jones, the Democrat, marks an important change in the political makeup of the U.S. Senate, where Republicans will now hold a one-seat margin as the majority party. This has significant implications for the agendas of President Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans.
