Have You Been Affected by the Shutdown?

Have you experienced the effects of the shutdown?

by Countable | Updated on 1.4.19

What’s the story?

  • As the partial government shutdown enters its twelfth day, federal workers aren’t the only ones finding themselves affected by Washington’s budget impasse.

How might the shutdown affect you?

  • If you visited a national park over the holidays, you may have experienced clashes over campgrounds and overflowing outhouses. California’s Joshua Tree National Park will close Wednesday as a result of the shutdown, which resulted in a health hazard as sanitation workers aren’t cleaning and emptying pit toilets.
"The park is being forced to take this action for health and safety concerns as vault toilets reach capacity," the National Park Service (NPS) wrote in a statement. "In addition to human waste in public areas, driving off road and other infractions that damage the resource are becoming a problem."
  • All Smithsonian museums, as well as the National Zoo, were shuttered on January 2nd. The last time the Smithsonian closed its doors was during the 2013 shutdown, which lasted 16 days.
  • While the USDA will continue distributing Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, it won’t be issuing any new rural development loans which are used to to aid home, business, and utility development in rural areas. The Small Business Administration also won’t be processing loan applications. Same goes for housing development grants.
  • E-Verify, which allows businesses to check the employment eligibility of workers and job-candidates, is no longer being updated.

What do you think?

Have you been affected by the shutdown? How? Do Senate Democrats & President Trump need to cut a deal on border security funding? Take action and tell your reps, then share your thoughts and experiences below.

Until this country is no longer run like a football game, DEMS VS. REPS, we are all going to lose. It is high time our representatives make their decisions based on the people not the party, we all lose.

I went to a national park and it was chaos. As for the shut down I hold donald j trump personally responsible. The Senate and House voted to fully fund the government in bipartisan fashion, he said he would support and sign the legislation, and he caved to the likes of mark meadows, laura ingraham, rush limbaugh, and other backward dark age thinking people. If I were a democrat I would play his words on tv and radio everyday about owning the shutdown.

That's the real problem. Out of sight out of mind. This isn't about just those who are not working because of the shutdown. It's about the state of our disfunctioning government. It's as though we have a rogue takeover with no regards to collateral damage. Our trust in our government is at a new low with no encouraging news on the horizon.

My son is in West Africa and is a Peace Corps volunteer. These people live out in the villages and do their work with a small wage for food and essentials. They could be in real trouble without the small wage they need to live. So yes, I am affected, as are so many good and hardworking, responsible people that the President and, frankly, the Republican Party doesn’t give a second thought. I know my Senators will do the right thing and stay working to get to an agreement on so many issues. My new Representative in the House, Mr. Riggleman, has seen fit to claim to be part of the always oppositional Freedom Caucus. Denver Riggleman, please remember that you represent the entire district, and we are real people with major concerns about partisan ideologues. This President does not understand any of this, but you all need to do your job.

I am effected by seeing our tv president taking our government, our institutions, our laws and our democracy hostage to some ill conceived idea that it’s better to use our tax money and resources to build a wall representing racism and division than to provide better healthcare, education, scientific research for improving our country. The shutdown impact our national psyche that we have an uneducated stupid racist president who doesn’t understand what the majority of the country wants and needs. Shame on congress that doesn’t hold this president responsible for his deeds.

My wife and I are both federal employees. We both work for FEMA. We are both furloughed. It has a tremendously negative effect on us, our programs, and current operations. Between the two of us, we manage critical response and recovery programs. I lead the transportable temporary housing unit program, and I am responsible for all direct temporary housing operations. She manages the crisis counseling, disaster case management, disaster legal services, and disaster unemployment services. Our programs and disaster survivors are suffering. Please reopen the government.

I am an unpaid federal civilian, forced to work because I’m an essential employee. I’m sick of my my livelihood and family being held hostage by a government that continues to use federal employees as a bargaining chip because they refuse to work together to accomplish what the people of this country want! I have bills to pay and groceries to buy to feed my kids. My creditors do not accept IOUs! I need to get paid! Every time you can’t agree it’s federal workers that suffer.

“Facts” regarding border security as conveyed by the White House do not accurately reflect the data that is known in the US CBP community.

Secure our borders one way or another. And keep the Government shut until you all commit. And forfeit your pay until done.

It’s time Democrats and Republicans put the safety of American citizens above druglords, human traffickers, cheap labor lobbyists and illegal aliens looking to exploit our social welfare system. Enough is enough. We are at a tipping point in this country. Secure the southern border and build that wall.

The Democrats and Republicans need to start doing their jobs and come together on legislation to protect our borders, fund the government and stop this partisan bickering.

My husband's medicare application processing is delayed. I cannot shop for medicare advantage plans without the medicare number; the insurers need the number to verify coverage.

To shut down an entire government over a border wall that covers barely nothing is nonsensical. While the argument is about border security, Congress passed a Secure Fence Act in 2006 and it was never completed due to lack of funds..................then 9/11 happened. Monies could be used for far more better things.

My husband works for the federal government so this affects us directly. No paycheck (immediate effect), no cost of living increase (longer term effect), and the ever-increasing pressure at work to "do more with less" can't last forever - eventually people will just bail and get jobs with private industry. Not that shutdowns haven't happened before, with equal impact - but it does get old when you have a mortgage and bills to pay.
