Trump Signs Order Freezing Federal Worker Pay Hike

by Axios | Updated on 12.29.18

President Trump signed an executive order Friday eliminating a 2.1% pay raise for federal workers due to take effect in January, following through on a pledge he made in August, CNN reports.

The backdrop: In a letter to House Speaker Paul Ryan earlier this year, Trump wrote that the pay freeze is intended "to put our Nation on a fiscally sustainable course," and that "federal agency budgets cannot sustain such increases." The executive order comes as 380,000 federal employees remain furloughed and 420,000 continue to work without pay as a result of the government shutdown, per CNN.

My mom was a Federal worker (researcher at the National Cancer Institute) and my friend Michelle from high school is a Federal worker (Department of Labor) - these are REAL PEOPLE... like actually friends and family. They work for us, for the taxpayers. And as a taxpayer, and daughter and friend and American, I WANT THEM TO GET PAID! And to get raises they deserve. If you, or the President don’t agree, then you (and he) should take a hard look at your morals and values. And your civic duty as fellow Americans.

Government workers are generally over paid, have far too many benefits and have ridiculous pensions. There are some notable exceptions of course, but overall a pay hike freeze is more than justified.

Are you kidding me? Most federal employees (myself included) are barely getting by to begin with. How would a 1.9% pay increase be detrimental to the economy? This administration is a dumpster fire.

The only people he cares about are his buddies. He’s going to destroy the American workforce. If the fat cats continue to squeeze the workforce like this, revolt is inevitable. We already watched this go down during the French Revolution. People don’t change, only the oligarchs do. A healthy workforce=a healthy economy. A weak workforce=societal collapse.

So the stupidest man in the world gives 3/4 of a trillion dollars to the military, wants 5-21 billion dollars for a useless wall, gave huge tax cuts for billionaires and has spent millions of tax dollars for himself and his family’s vacation security, but is going to save the budget by not giving people that actually work for a living a pay raise that won’t even cover the increased cost of living brought about by his tariffs. Definitely towing the “conservative” line. Feed the rich, screw the poor.

Federal workers, on average, make less than their civilian counterparts. Pensions for federal workers were eliminated awhile ago in favor of an IRA-like matching. Federal workers are subject to unexpected furloughs with no guarantee of back pay without which they may take a considerable time to catch up on bills. Many work hours without any compensation because of paperwork and training requirements and because overtime and compensatory time off are not generally allowed. They are expected to work without pay during furlough periods. They may incur late fees, credit rating hits, credit card debt and other debt they may not otherwise have incurred and for which they won’t be reimbursed. This also impacts ability to pay into their retirement funds. These are other things their civilian counterparts don’t face. And now you consider freezing already low pay so they lose ground to increases in cost of living? What quality of worker do you want in the federal system? How about simple fairness?

The fact that he can do this by executive fiat is horrendous. Congress has truly abdicated it’s responsibility to the American people.

Trump really is pond scum. First, he forces a government shutdown for his stupid border wall causing thousands of federal workers to be furloughed or work without pay during the holiday season and now he denies those same federal workers a pay increase for the sake fiscal responsibility when he has already signed a tax bill that added $1.5 trillion to the deficit. He needs to be impeached for all the crimes he’s guilty of and for just being nothing, but complete garbage.

Our Congress men and women need to get back to work in Washington. They DO NOT get a PAID vacation because they did NOT do their job. They shut the government down. They should NOT get paid for NOT doing the job we elected them to do! They could have overrided his veto and made the wall a separate issue. McConnell refused to do this. This is ALL on the Repugnants! NO DOUBT ABOUT IT!

2%? That’s basically just a cost of living increase. If the budget can’t sustain that, there’s a serious problem with the budget. (Of course it can.)

Someone forgot to lock up #45’s Executive Pen; send him back to little kids table with the jumbo crayons. It’s a little too late to start worrying about the Treasury being in the red under the Bozo-in-Chief’s watch. It would be laughable if it weren’t so tragic. The better plan would be to freeze the free money give-a-way to the top 1%. I guess the trickle down money bragged by the egomaniac didn’t pan out. What. A. Surprise.
