U.S. Customs Orders Medical Checks After Second Immigrant Child Dies

by Axios | Updated on 12.26.18

U.S. Customs and Border Protection ordered medical checks on every child in its custody Wednesday after an 8-year-old boy from Guatemala died, the second death of a child immigrant under the agency's watch this month, the AP reports.

The big picture: CBP Commissioner Kevin McAleenan said Wednesday that the agency has more than 1,500 emergency medical technicians on hand, and that officers are taking dozens of sick immigrant children to hospitals every day. “This is an extraordinarily rare occurrence,” McAleenan told CBS. "It’s been more than a decade since we’ve had a child pass away anywhere in a CBP process, so this is just devastating for us.” The number of children in the agency's care is unknown, a CPB spokesperson said Tuesday, but the agency is reaching out to other government agencies to help with medical assistance.

DEMOCRATS — PLACE THE BLAME ON WHERE IT BELONGS. I’m in agreement that they U.S. Customs and Border Protection has ordered medical checks on every child in its custody after an 8-year-old boy from Guatemala died, the second death of a child immigrant under the agency's watch this month. It’s sad that the children have passed away, BUT, in not questionable that had not they were forced on the journey from their home country’s, the likelihood of their passing, would not have occurred. It’s convenient for the Democratic Party and its brainwashed followers to place the blame on the CBP and President Trump for the incarnation of the children 👶 when, in fact, the blame rests on the migrants, for the illegal entry into the 🇺🇸 USA. “Extraordinarily rare” would have been a single death. Beyond that, it’s no longer rare.

These recent deaths of innocent children show the extent that people would go to escape the situation they live in. The cost of providing a little food and rest for even the least of us just doesn't sound like too much to ask. It should be standard procedure to at the least do a check up on these children knowing their circumstances. To do nothing is inhumane. We do more for dogs and cats that are picked up by the local dog catcher. At least the animals get basic life needs. I guess these children must be at the least a little lower class than the animals. A little common decency couldn't hurt.

It’s time for Trump’s chumps to reconsider how they work. There are better ways to work with immigrants and asylum seekers than fear and punishment all the time.

What about the mental health of these children ripped away from their families and shut up in what amounts to prison camps? What about increasing instances of sexual abuse by other"inmates" and the very people who are supposed to be taking care of and protecting these children.

Two kids out of thousands. You mean to tell me none of the kids died in any of the other trips across the border? If a kid dies in the desert and there is no one to bury him or her, are they dead?

An 8-year-old Guatemalan child detained by U.S. Customs and Border Protection died early Tuesday at a hospital in New Mexico. It is unfortunate an 8-year-old child die or any child or adult died. I am sure the people that had them (CBP) in their custody did everything they could to help. A 3,000 mile walk with poor condition, living out in the open is hard on the healthiest person. What they left was worse and worth the chance! My prayers are with the family and their loss. A wall would not have save them or help them!

These “immigrants” seem to be a sickly bunch. Didn’t I hear that they don’t carry disease?

What about “The cause of death has yet to be determined” do people NOT understand??? It’s highly unlikely that the child (who’s parents forced him to participate in the CRIME OF ILLEGALLY ENTERING THE U.S.) short time in U.S. custody was the cause of his illness and death!!!! 🙄🙄🙄

I doubt that the deaths of these children were at all directly related to the US Border Patrol. I think the travel of illegal immigrants takes the biggest toll on these kids. Build that Wall!

The risks of attempting to cross any border illegally are well defined. The parents who put their children at risk should be severely punished. They would not make good citizens anyway being as reckless and law breaking as they are. Dems. like Piglosi and Schummer are responsible for this for not compromising on building the wall and improving our border security . It is certainly not the fault of our border patrol or our country.

Come on y’all - we have to step it up. In healthcare administration leaders point the finger at the process first. To reduce or eliminate variation is the goal here right? The process is out of control. Something HAS to be going on with it IF indeed these kids are outliers as they are claiming. What’s happened? New people? No training? Rogue staff? Don’t throw spaghetti at the wall. Figure the root cause out. When the process is as stable as can get it THEN if people don’t follow it get them OUT. These are real kids and real people - we are playing with lives. Unacceptable.

These deaths are a direct result of the failed trump administration policy. Incarcerations and family separation are deplorable. This will be the Manzanar of our time. Shameful.

These detainments are inhumane. People should not be dying here. I dislike the fact that my tax dollars support this and I would like for my reps to do everything in their power to have these detainments come to an end. If they are to continue then I want everyone treated humanely. I want adequate medical staff and equipment on stand by to respond in a timely manner. I want there to be education for the children waiting.
