The Daily Countable: Resignations, Olympic Hesitations & Climate Negotiations

by Countable | 12.8.17

Greetings, Folks. Nicely done. You’ve made it to the weekend. Here’s what you’ll be discussing over Shabbat dinner tonight:

One Big Thing

Washington is still reeling from the resignation of two Congressional members yesterday over claims of sexual harassment: Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) resigned Thursday morning and Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ) resigned in the evening. Read about both, and other recent (and past) sexual harassment investigations here.

On the Radar

Will you be able to root for the U.S.A. at this year’s Winter Olympics? U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said it’s still an "open question" if the stars-and-stripes will head to Pyeongchang, South Korea. Find out why in our article.

Under the Radar

In August, President Donald Trump withdrew the U.S. from the Paris climate accord. But forget Paris: 40-something U.S. mayors have signed the "Chicago Climate Charter." Read our story on this new climate-change initiative, then let your mayor know your thoughts.

Your Gov at a Glance 👀

The White House: President Trump in DC

  • The President had a working lunch with VP Mike Pence then a meeting with Secretary of Defense James Mattis.

  • D.C. work done, Trump will head to Pensacola, Florida, for a Make America Great Again rally.

  • Tomorrow, Trump will participate in the grand opening celebration of the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum.

The House of Representatives: Out

  • The House will return Monday, December 11.

The Senate: Out

  • The Senate will return Monday, December 11.

Keep in touch, Countable folk. We’re anxious to hear your ideas, suggestions, and weekend plans.

Praying for common sense and decency to return to all 3 branches of our Federal government. I’m also praying that Donald Trump cancels his appearance at the Civil Rights Museum in Mississippi tomorrow. It’s hypocritical snd has prevented true civil rights hero’s like John Lewis from attending because Trump is a white supremacist and represents that ilk. What a joke he is. Talk about pink elephant in the room.

    1) we are fortunate to have so many mayors who believe 99.9% of the scientist who say climate change is real and are not waiting for God to fix it. 2) President Trump needs to realize the election is over, to continue to campaign on the taxpayers backs is criminal. Taxpayers should not have to pay for the president to promote a pedophile to the Senate. 3)President Trump a white supremacist going to A civil rights museum opening is just a sham to promote pedophile Roy Moore agenda. They are trying to show African-American voters that they are on their side, if you believe that you should look tomorrow in the mailbox for your $1,000,000. check.

Keep the Olympics in Korea, Climate change is real and those who think otherwise are complete fools. We have crossed the line of no return. Just look at California, Africa, rising ocean levels hell every day the streets are flooded. The Republicans are foolish children 👶

Climate change is a phenomenon of nature. The earth goes through climate change cycles all the time. However, man may be accelerating the warming trend. Without CO2, all plants WILL die! The planet itself has been growing greener since the CO2 has increased. Without plants, no oxygen is produced and therefore all life ENDS!! Think about this.

Glad President Trump will be going to the civil rights museum. Representative Lewis will certainly miss out. Sad he can't put politics aside for this.

The part I find to be most difficult and disturbing and disgusting part about the whole ignoring Moore and Trump sexual misconduct. Is all the church leaders who continue to back Trump/Pence both openly and through their silence. Organizations like Focus of the Family and the LDS church who stand in the wings, doing nothing while hellfire destroys the family and allows young girls to be exploited through their contributions. They have let greed drive their actions rather than wisdom and humanity.

For those science deniers, the Bible says in numerous place that people are to be good stewards of the earth! In other news, why does 45 continue to waste our tax dollars by running around the country stumping for an accused child molester. But coming from a man who bragged about sexually assaulting women on national TV I guess that’s what you can expect.

Al Franken didn't resign. Prisoners dilemma is approaching as soon as the votes in Alabama are counted. If Franken resigned Thursday morning, why is he still voting today?

Clinton, Bush, and Obamma did nothing to reduce the trade deficit that is now driving the Federal deficit straight down into oblivion. They left us with an economy in critical danger that is totally addicted to "quantitative easing" which is where the banks can legally claim much higher reserves than ever existed. China is 52% of the trade deficit and apparel is 43%. Mexico is only 8% and steel is only 4%. Thank fully fracking reduced the energy trade deficit from 46% in 2011 down to 19% in 2015. Bush destabilized the middle east by invading Iraq. The trade deficit has sucked over half a trillion dollars out of our banks every year. It has removed the demand for about 70 million jobs and made our taxable economy too small to support federal spending. This is what has been left for Trump to fix. Really a nice job by Clinton, Bush, and Obama!

Well you can tell Senator Franken was not on the payroll. He admitted his guilt, fessed up and apologized not only to the ladies he offended but to the entire nation. These others must be bought and paid for or in debt to someone and can not resign.

As a member of Congress your job is to represent your constituents. As your constituent, I would like you to know that I am strongly in favor of net neutrality. I believe the free and fair internet deserves to be protected, and I want you to work to remove Ajit Pai from office. I am also opposed to the egregious GOP tax plan that is really just a tax cut for the wealthiest Americans. I want Donald Trump's tax returns to be made public. It is a travesty that the public has not been able to see them yet. Gerrymandering in this state is out of control, and we need legislation that allows voters to choose their representatives not representatives to choose their constituents. Please work to protected our wildlife refuges. Companies should not be drilling for oil in wildlife refuges.

All harassers should resign. Moore should be investigated and envied from any future office. Those who vote for him show a desire more for power and a biblical control of women; are no better than any other male abusers and should be shamed. Climate change is real. The science and trend analysis show warmer summers. If one doesn't believe in this analysis, please stop using medical services. It's built on the same basic physics, chemistry and biological sciences. It is foolish to believe in the great advances of medicine and use these services then discount climate science. See if prayer helps you. Me, I'm all in for science. No Olympics. Sounds good. Former President Carter did that too. One term. We can only hope that the President follows suit.

I disagree with the wish that the President cancels his appearance at the opening of the museum, I think Senator Lewis should have respect for the President of the USA. He will not admit The Dems Lost The Election. He is the one that started the Dems not going to the Inaugration & called for Impreachment, he can do all of us a favor and resign.

The Liberal Democrats are in disarray. They preach equality of the sexes and they are the ones who can’t keep their trousers on. The liberal press and Hollywood talking all this rubbish about President Trump and Karma got them back.
