Detentions Spike, Border Arrests Fall

What’s the story?
President Donald Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration appears to be working: arrests along the border have fallen to their lowest level in 45 years while the number of deportations has soared by 25 percent compared to a year earlier.
What are the numbers?
According to a report by the Department of Homeland Security, during the government’s 2017 fiscal year (which ended September 30), border agents made 310,531 arrests, a decline of 24 percent from the previous year—and the fewest overall since 1971.
Meanwhile, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers said they conducted 110,568 "interior removals" between Inauguration Day and September 30—a 42 percent increase over the same period last year.
Tom Homan, ICE’s temporary director and the President’s nominee to lead the agency, credited Trump for the numbers:
"This president, like him or love him, is doing the right thing. A 45-year low in border crossings? That’s not a coincidence. That’s based on this president and his belief and letting the men and women of ICE and the Border Patrol do their job."
What do you think?
Do you support the immigration crackdown? And if crossings are dropping, do we need to spend billions on a border wall? Hit Take Action and tell your reps, then share your thoughts below.
