Defense Secretary James Mattis to Depart White House in February

by Axios | Updated on 12.20.18

President Trump announced on Twitter Thursday that his defense secretary, James Mattis, will be "retiring" at the end of February.

Why it matters: The announcement comes just a day after Trump said he would be withdrawing U.S. troops from Syria, a move Mattis reportedly opposed.

Not good. General Mattis was one of the last restraints on I1’s erratic behavior. General Mattis kept him from using our military illegally. I wonder if Mattis knew that beforehand... Individual 1 had been known to tweet peoples “retirements” or “resignations” before the people themselves knew they were happening...

A good General knows when to charge; a great General knows when to retreat.

The departure of General ‘Mad Dog’ Mattis will have the US at warp speed spiraling downward. When the best of the best, a decorated member of the United States Marine Corps, resigns as the Secretary of Defense because Gen. Mattis felt his views were not “aligned” with the Bozo-in-Chief’s policy, shows the despicable state of our country. Proof of #45’s muddied mental state, he Tweeted that Gen. Mattis was retiring. In Gen. Mattis’ letter, he clearly advises #45 that he is resigning. The Bozo-in-Chief is delusional if he believes he’ll find someone else as perfectly suited for the position of Secretary of Defense as General Mattis has been. #45 believes he knows better than anyone else in foreign affairs, in military strategy, in domestic welfare, and a million other things. The truth is that #45 has absolutely no intellectual heft, no military experience, no domestic empathy, no skills as a good leader, not even as a mediocre leader, needed for the executive position. With John Kelly and General Joe Mattis departures, the WH administration is clearly falling apart.

Ok. It’s time for congress to step up and override this president. This is a dangerous time and our president is wasting our time. Think about it! If we had a competent leader we would not be in this situation.

"One core belief I have always held is that our strength as a nation is inextricably linked to the strength of our unique and comprehensive system of alliances and partnerships. While the US remains the indispensable nation in the free world, we cannot protect our interests or serve that role effectively without maintaining strong alliances and showing respect to those allies," -General Jim Mattis

Men of integrity will not continue to work with those who have none. What will it take for Republicans to stand up to Trump and call him out for his incompetent lack of ability to lead and govern?

I heard Jim Mattis’s resignation letter read on TV. Trump is destroying everything. I applaud Marti’s for his integrity in the Syria and Afghanistan decision of an incompetent president. The whir house is Dysfunction Junction.

I imagine that Mattis was very upset about Trump’s decision to pull troops out of Syria without consulting anyone in his administration. Is anyone going to stand up to this president? Who the hell would sign on to this level of crazy?

I understand why a Marine like Mattis would resign. Honorable and principled men are never compromised. Semper fidelis

Just GREAT. The only adult with a brain is leaving. Taking troops out of Syria- Maddis KNOWS WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN. Kind of mad at him for leaving us to that big baby. The Mid East is going to collapse. We’ll be SORRY.

I understand Gen. Mattis's reasoning but .... I have never felt more frightened for our country. Trump is becoming more and more out of control....WHEN will the "Checks" assert themselves to bring our country back to "Balance"?

It is so apparent that the main reason for pulling out of Syria is to use the saved money to pay for the wall he promised. Remember, the president is not polictical but transactional. I don't believe it matters to Trump who he picks because he will do what he wants anyway. Remember he said, "We don't lead anymore".
