Trump Administration Unveils Plan to Tighten Food Stamp Access

Do you support tighter work requirements for food stamp access?

by Axios | Updated on 12.20.18

The Trump administration announced a plan Thursday to use its executive power to tighten the work requirements for the nation's food assistance program, the Washington Post reports.

What's happening: Under the USDA's current rules, Americans without dependents are required to work if they collect food stamps for three months in a three-year period, but that requirement is scrapped if they live in an area where the unemployment rate is 20% higher than the national average — which currently sits at 3.7%. The Trump administration wants to allow the waiver to stand only in areas with an unemployment rate above 7%, which could force hundreds of thousands of Americans out of the program.

Tougher food assistance requirements were part of the House's version of the farm bill, but they were not included in the Senate version, which is expected to cross President Trump's desk today.

  • Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue defended the policy on a call, per the Post, "This is unacceptable to most Americans and belies common sense, particularly when employment opportunities are as plentiful as they currently are. ... This restores the dignity of work to a sizable segment of our population."
  • But congressional Democrats think that the decision oversteps the executive branch's power. Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), the Senate Agriculture Committee's ranking member, said, "Administrative changes should not be driven by ideology. I do not support unilateral and unjustified changes that would take food away from families."

For every $10 in food stamps cut, we should cut $1million dollars of entitlements to Big Oil and other corporations and $10 million from defense budget.

Best economy in our nations history. We have 9.2 million open jobs that cannot be filled. Yes, welfare recipients should at a bare minimum be required to seek employment. After all, our welfare system was designed to be a helping hand up when you are down but not a lifelong hand out. We have to get back to common sense basics in this country. Fast.

Unemployment rate is lowest in how many years? My guess is Trump needs to find money to pay our country's bills after giving hand outs to corporations. No commitments from corporations who get billions. Take milk and bread from those who just need to feed their children. As if having to use foods stamps isn't humiliating enough.

I WOULD RATHER HAVE TAX PAYER MONEY BENEFIT THE PEOPLE WHO NEED IT ....THAN TO WASTE IT ON A STUPID WALL OR FUNDING WARS. MAYBE THE POLITICIANS NEED TO BE PAID MINIMUM WAGE SO THEY CAN UNDERSTAND WHAT IT IS LIKE TO LIVE PAY CHECK TO PAY CHECK OR MAYBE NOT RECEIVE ANY PAY ..... AFTER ALL THEY ARE PUBLIC SERVANTS ..... ALL OF YOU START DOING THE JOB YOU WERE SWORN IN TO DO ....

WE MUST END THE FEDERAL DEPENDENCY CYCLE I’m in agreement with the Trump administrations announced plan to use its executive power to tighten the work requirements for the nation's food assistance program. The food stamp programs a good program in which to provide supplemental subsistence when properly used for that purposes, but not for being sold on the streets or for acquiring products such as alcoholic beverages, cigarettes and the like. SneakyPete..... 🤔🤷🏼‍♂️🤷‍♀️🤔. 12*22*18.....

Screw ‘em, starve ‘em, put ‘em in a box, this is what Mr Trump likes. To deliberately deny anyone access to food is the essence of evil.

I would like to see those politicians in support of this measure be required to “walk in the shoes” of someone dependent on food stamps for at least two weeks to fully comprehend the stresses and humiliation of poverty. The assumptions privileged Americans make on those needing public assistance is not based on reality.

Seriously?! There are people who actually do need this because of jobs outsourced. It is quite obvious these career politicians have never gone hungry a day in their life!

Most SNAP recipients are working poor. This kind of change will cause many people in very rural areas and inner cities to suffer.

There are several problems with this policy including the hypocritical use of 'Executive Orders' to get djt what he wants. He railed against the Obama White House for the use of Executive Orders when McConnell and the GOP put their egos and disdain for a President above the needs and desires of the American people. He has taken that practice to a whole new level considering HE is operating in an atmosphere of UNIFIED government - at least for now. If he can't get members of his own party to back him, maybe it is because they finally realize his ridiculous views are NOT shared by the majority of THEIR constituents. This is just the latest attack on the most vulnerable in our society by a man who lacks compassion, empathy and the desire to govern for the good of the nation, not himself.

I want to ensure that single mothers are not expected to work harder to support and feed their families. This sounds like just another attack on the poor by the GOP.

When people need help, when people need food, give it to them! Hunger and poverty are not moral failings.

There should be some exception for medical reasons or disability. I did not see clarification on that subject.

Stop cutting funding for programs that families rely on to take care of their children, if you’re not also going to raise wages. You are pulling the rug out from under millions of parents and leave them no alternatives.
