What’s the story?
Early Wednesday afternoon President Trump officially announced his recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, and his intention to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, in accordance with the 1995 Jerusalem Embassy Act. He insisted, in contrast to many world leaders, that the reversal of policy was a necessary step to lasting peace between the Israelis and Palestinians:

In contrast to Presidents Clinton, Bush and Obama, President Trump insisted that he was "delivering" on a promise:

Secretary of State Tillerson issued a statement in support of the president’s declaration, and committing to immediately begin pursuing the movement of the U.S. embassy:

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu immediately put out a statement, thanking President Trump for his action:

Protest gatherings have begun around the world in response to the declaration, though Christian Evangelical leaders here in the U.S. are reported to have been jubilant on a call with the president immediately following his remarks.
