It’s difficult to stay up-to-date on what’s happening in this country and to break through the clutter, so we’re here to make it easier. Here’s what we at Countable are reading today:
"Russia carried out a comprehensive cybercampaign to upend the U.S. presidential election, an operation that was ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin and “aspired to help" elect Donald Trump by discrediting his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, U.S. intelligence agencies concluded in a report released Friday.”
"The report depicts Russian interference as unprecedented in scale, saying that Moscow’s assault represented “a significant escalation in directness, level of activity, and scope of effort" beyond previous election-related espionage.”

"President-elect Donald Trump said he had a "constructive" meeting with members of U.S. intelligence agencies on Friday and plans to appoint a team to give him a plan to combat cyber attacks within 90 days of taking office on Jan. 20."
""While Russia, China, other countries, outside groups and people are consistently trying to break through the cyber infrastructure of our governmental institutions, businesses and organizations including the Democrat National Committee, there was absolutely no effect on the outcome of the election including the fact that there was no tampering whatsoever with voting machines," Trump said in a statement after the briefing from spy chiefs who have accused Russia of hacking to interfere in the 2016 U.S. election."

"House Republicans this week reinstated an arcane procedural rule that enables lawmakers to reach deep into the budget and slash the pay of an individual federal worker — down to $1 — a move that threatens to upend the 130-year-old civil service."
"The Holman Rule, named after an Indiana congressman who devised it in 1876, empowers any member of Congress to propose amending an appropriations bill to single out a government employee or cut a specific program."

"A lone shooter opened fire Friday afternoon at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida, killing five people and wounding eight others before he was taken into custody, the Broward County sheriff said."
"The suspected gunman appeared to be shooting randomly into a crowd as panicked travelers took cover behind chairs — and he only stopped when his bullets ran out, according to witnesses. Multiple senior law enforcement sources identified the suspect as New Jersey born Esteban Santiago, 26, and said he had a military ID on him."

"Today the ballots of Electoral College voters were certified and tallied before a joint session of Congress overseen by Vice President Joe Biden, and the official winner of the 2016 presidential election was declared. While the count ultimately confirmed that President-elect Donald Trump won the election, the process does allow for members of Congress to object to individual electoral votes which added some intrigue to an otherwise straightforward process."

It's a sad day when the party of patriotism sides with communist dictators over American intelligence agencies. These are not the actions of people who claim to put the countries needs first.
Special independent investigation into Russian hacking and trumps participation!
Why is there not a special investigation in congress about this? There were 33 special investigations on Benghazi.
Please form a select committee to investigate Russian meddling as soon as possible!
Those who are involved need to be held accountable and not have this just be swept under the rug...what does McConnell know? Seems fishy to me that his wife gets a spot in the administration...
Please support effort to continue this investigation. We need to protect our democracy from foreign meddling regardless of our partisan interests.
This needs to be investigated more than Benghazi. This is a serious threat to our democracy.
Stern action must be taken, republicans must not cave on this one.
I want this investigated to the same extent that the GOP used to investigate Benghazi.
Russia carried out a comprehensive cybercampaign to upend the U.S. presidential election, an operation that was ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin and “aspired to help" a presidential hopeful. This should concern all Americans regardless of political party as it undermines and threatens fair elections. I urge you to support actions that will investigate.
Trumps team asked for individual names of people working on gender equality, climate change, Energy Department (the one he couldn't remember the name of during the debates!) and others weeks before Holeman Rule? Guess what happens next.
Hello, please work to repeal the Holman rule. I worry that Republicans will use the rule to target vital government agencies they don't like (i.e. The EPA). This rule gives the government too much power and I they will likely use it as appease big donors like fossil fuel lobbyists. Thanks!
Was the Trump campaign aware of Russia's involvement prior to the election? If so, were they communicating and working with the Russians? Or does Putin just have a copy of Trumps tax returns and is blackmailing him?
The thought that Russia has effective strategic control of the United States through the President Elect should send chills down the spine of every American. Trump's entangled business dealings with Russian oligarchs, his personal friendship with the Russian dictator as well as the CIA confirmed hacking by Russian operatives during the election should be investigated.
Stop revival of the Holman rule. This creates the opportunity for Congress to take retaliatory action against individuals working for the Federal Government, suppressing employees' willingness to speak out. It makes the civil service a political partisan quagmire, instead of holding them out of reach of political issues so they may confidently serve the taxpayer under the law.
Please back all efforts to investigate this and take action. We cannot ignore foreign leaders meddling in US elections.
Investigate in a select committee
Where was the outrage when Obama tried to interfere in the Israeli election?
Stop the planned parenthood witch hunt. These are programs that help disadvantaged women.
Re: Russian hacking - first, we must expect hacking and snooping from every front and improve and maintain cyber security. We can pursue burglars but must be vigilant and lock the doors. Second, PE's relationships, wild ass statements, and secrecy are frightening. Investigate and get his tax returns. Not on topic; but look exhaustively at PE conflict of interest. Good grief!
