New Trump Proposal Will Weaken Federal Clean Water Rules

Do you support this proposal?

by Axios | Updated on 12.11.18

The Trump administration is set to roll back clean water rules dating back to the George H.W. Bush administration that were designed to provide expansive federal quality protections on millions of acres of waterways and wetlands, the New York Times' Coral Davenport reports.

Why it matters: "Environmentalists say the proposal represents a historic assault on wetlands regulation at a moment when Mr. Trump has repeatedly voiced a commitment to 'crystal-clean water,'" Davenport writes.

Details: The new measure, which Trump will promote as relieving farmers, rural landowners and real estate developers from federal burdens, seeks to replace an Obama-era rule that aimed "to limit pollution in about 60 percent of the nation’s bodies of water, protecting sources of drinking water for about a third of the United States," Davenport adds.

  • The 2015 regulation also limited farmers from certain types of plowing and planting certain crops on land near wetlands or streams, and mandated that farmers seek permits from the Environmental Protection Agency in order to use chemical pesticides and fertilizers that could run off into the water.
  • Trump's proposal will not get rid of federal protections on larger bodies of water, which were in place prior to the Obama-era rule, but it will chip away at protections of smaller streams and wetlands that don't drain into or are directly adjacent to those larger bodies of water, per the Times.

The bottom line: "Those changes represent a victory for farmers and rural landowners, who lobbied the Trump administration aggressively to make them," writes Davenport.

What's next: The administration will seek public comments on the new rule for 60 days, after which it may revise the proposal before implementing the finalized plan next year.

The big picture: This is the latest attempt by Trump and the EPA to roll back a slew of regulations, including reducing protections for at-risk plants and animals, opening Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil exploration and reversing rules intended to prevent methane, one of the most powerful greenhouse gases.

As an RN I saw children with lead poisoning who had brain damage leading to at lifetime of hardship for both the child and parents. Going back to allowing our water to be poisoned is fine for the oligarchs like #45 & the privileged in Washington who can afford clean water, but the rest of us will be poisoned daily.. This is absolutely immoral and completely untenable.

Fouling our water supply is not the way to improve or maintain our national health standard.

A more honest headline would be: "Trump trims back massive Federal overreach and reigns in out of control bureaucracies." But Countable is no more honest than any other left leaning media outlet.

Just because we have a president that pits greed and money above health and welfare doesn't mean that we should all follow suit. It just makes sense that we would want a cleaner safer planet to live on. This is not the direction that leads to anything great again.

Like many of the other unnecessary regulations, this needs to go. The government and its far-reaching tentacles should become much, much smaller.

We are facing a serious water shortage crisis that (actual) scientists predict could happen sooner than people think if it’s not addressed worldwide. Only 1% of the water on this earth is freshwater. We have to be ramping up the protection on this precious and vital resource that we all take for granted, not rolling it back.

As a teenager, I want to have access to clean drinking water to decades to come, and this rollback to environmental regulations put streams in danger of pollution. This proposed legislation is also a threat to endangered plants and animals that rely on clean drinking water to survive. If you go swimming in a lake or in a national park, you don't want to worry about your health and we want to trust the government to protect our water resources.

This is another attempt by this corrupt administration to cater to the special interests who celebrate their increased wealth when government protections are taken from the public and bestowed upon private corporations. They don’t care about the health and safety of the public. They care only about enriching themselves by paying fewer expenses that ultimately benefit their bottom lines.

When will it end, this dismantling of all our environmental protections? 45 and his minions are not only rolling back Pres. Obama’s initiatives, they’re rolling back every president’s EPA progress for clean air and water over the past 50+ years. This has to stop now!!

Trump is continually taking actions to destroy environmental protections, public lands, wildlife. His actions are taking us back to the 50’s. These actions will affect people’s health and do irreparable damage to our environment,

It looks like someone found real world versions of Captain Planet villains and put them in charge. Imagine Flint Michigan water crisis happing in every state in every city. Imagine the only water you have access to isn't safe to drink or touch. The romaine lettuce incident showed the consequences of rolling back water regulations.

Why does this traitor hate healthy Americans so much? Or a healthy world, for that matter? In a saner administration this would not even be a rational question. He'll be dead soon (insurance age tables), but we who remain must live with the consequences of his illegality and immorality.
