House Passes Short-Term Funding Bill to Avoid Government Shutdown

Should Trump hold out for border wall funding, even if it means a government shutdown?

by Axios | 12.6.18

The House of Representatives passed a continuing resolution on Thursday to push the government shutdown deadline to Dec. 21, handing it off to the Senate for approval, CNBC reports.

The big picture: The shutdown standoff — originally set for this week — was delayed after the death of former President George H.W. Bush. Democrats are still refusing to give Trump the $5 billion he wants for his border wall, though Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has reportedly offered the president $1.6 billion for border security — a move that prompted backlash from many progressives. A meeting between Trump, Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has also been delayed until next week, Politico reports.

Pass a budget with zero funding for border wall. Don't waste my money on the ridiculous condemnation of immigrants and refugees!

Ronald: No border wall money, unless Mexico is paying for it! Just like “the Don” promised. Hold him to that promise. That’s what he got elected on. Not you and I paying for it! Congress didn’t promise it. Your dictator, Butthead did! Your ignorance is showing...

Not another penny should be spent on walls that do not keep us safer and they are not wanted in any of the border states. These walls are killing wildlife and humans. Totally inhumane!

America voted against the wall when they mostly voted for Clinton. Also the wall would be next to useless.

Please, PLEASE, before the Democrats take back the House in January, do everything in your power to pass as much critical legislation as physically possible: Fund the rest of the government, fund at LEAST $4 billion of the border wall along with extra monies for ICE/CBP and border technology, pass criminal justice reform, get the Farm Bill to the President with work requirements for SNAP, permanently reauthorize the Land and Water Conservation Fund, and please reform our AWFUL asylum laws. With asylum reform, we MUST codify into law the requirement that illegal aliens must present at a legal port of entry like all civilized human beings, and aliens should be held (with their children) indefinitely until their asylum claims can be adjudicated.

Popular vote was not won by drumpf so the majority of Americans therefore do not want a border wall. Not one cent.

There should not be a wall and it would be a huge waste of funding that could go toward Medicaid and education.

It is long overdue. I think of our national border security in likeness to my yard. I put up a fence to keep unwanted intruders out. There will always be ways around the fence for those determined enough to get in. Improving the security of our borders will only strengthen the U.S. There are numerous LEGAL entry points into our country. If you truly want to be a part of our great nation then you can pass through those points.
