New House Democrats Using Instagram to Lift Veil on Congress
Does Congress' inner-workings need to be made more accessible?
What’s the story?
- Last week, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez became the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. The 29-year-old representative from New York’s 14th congressional district is currently in D.C. for New Member Orientation, and is using Instagram Stories to de-mystify D.C.
- As Politico explained, "By providing up-close-and-personal photos and short videos of the new-member orientation process on Instagram, four newly elected women of color — Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, [Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan — are amassing followings that dwarf those of most members of Congress."
