Nearly 700,000 adults in the U.S. have received "conversion therapy" of some form at some point in their lives. An additional 57,000 will go through "conversion therapy" in the next five years - unless we take action.
Few practices hurt LGBTQ youth more than attempts to change their sexual orientation or gender identity through "conversion therapy." Victims of this terrible practice very often experience depression, substance abuse, and often contemplate suicide.
"Conversion therapy"—sometimes called “ex-gay therapy”—has been condemned by every major medical and mental health organization in the country as harmful and ineffective, including the American Medical Association, the American Psychological Association, and the American Psychiatric Association.
While many states, like Colorado, are moving to ban "conversion therapy," we must now demand a permanent ban of this practice, plain and simple.
It’s time to amp our voices by calling for an end to "conversion therapy."
