New Attorney General Must Protect States’ Rights on Marijuana, Colorado Sen. Gardner Says - Do You Agree?
Vote to see how others feel about this issue
What’s the story?
- Republican Sen. Cory Gardner of Colorado has said that the next attorney general is going to have to respect the rights of states that have chosen to legalize medical and recreational marijuana.
- “Whoever comes after him is going to face some pretty tough questions about where they stand on states’ rights and making sure they will stand up for states’ rights,” Gardner told The Denver Post on Thursday.
“I am going to demand that the new attorney general side with the president because the president is right on states’ rights.”
- Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions had rescinded Obama-era guidelines that eased the enforcement of federal marijuana laws. A Justice Department official said the guidelines had "created a safe harbor for the marijuana industry to operate in these states and … there is a belief that that is inconsistent with what the federal law says."
- Marijuana remains illegal at the federal level.
What do you think?
The Senate will confirm the next AG—should it be someone who respects states’ marijuana rights? Or are you hoping for someone like Sessions who said “Good people don’t smoke marijuana”? Take action above to tell your reps, then share your thoughts below.
