Trump Replaces Attorney General Jeff Sessions

by Axios | Updated on 11.7.18

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has submitted his resignation at the request of President Trump, according to a letter addressed to Trump released by the Justice Department.

Why it matters: The president has made it clear he wants Sessions out of the Justice Department and has blamed him for Robert Mueller's investigation into possible collusion with Russia in the 2016 election. Trump tweeted on Wednesday afternoon that a "permanent replacement will be nominated at a later date" and for now, DOJ chief of staff Matthew Whitaker will serve as acting attorney general.

That didn’t take long. He’s worried what Mueller has and what the new Congress will do with it. Protect Mueller at all costs, Trump must answer for his actions!

I despise Sessions but I despise OBSTRUCTION of Justice by a lifetime crook and evaded of Justice far more... The Law matters.. AND each step he takes towards the Saturday night massacre while the GOP does NOTHING is a slap in the face to Justice, the Rule of Law, and our Government and Constitution as well as the Office of President. It's time the spineless Koch puppet GOP stop this blatant crap.

#45 is only concerned abt himself and is doing this in an attempt to end the Mueller Investigation. Sad state of affairs in our country.

There is only one reason Trump wants Sessions to resign, and that is because Trump needs an attorney general who will play ball with him and limit the Russia investigation.

Obviously, this is Trump’s reaction to losing control of the House to the Democrats. Trump has repeatedly and publicly lamented Session’s inaction in shutting down the Mueller Probe, and now that Dems hold the House, he’s trying to insert “yes men” into the AG’s office fast to fire Mueller before the Dems can pass protective laws for Mueller. I’m no fan of Session, but I believe this is Trump trying to maneuver to deal the death blow to the Russia Probe.

Here we go. 45 is now on his way to shutting down the Mueller investigation, a la Saturday Night Massacre. He has taken the midterms as a green light to take the focus off his conspiracy and his influence peddling and his financial cheating and his other crimes. This is why he wanted Kavanaugh on the Court. This is why he wanted the Senate. Is this country going to stand up for the Constitution or is it going to meekly submit to a Fascist Regime? Choose now. Because there may not ever be a later for America.

It’s so clear he needed Sessions out to get rid of Mueller for obvious reasons. What has to happen to initiate obstruction of justice charges.

Now trump can appoint an interim AG that will bend to his will. Just one more spineless lackey.

Sessions has turned out to be a dud against the swamp. We need an AG that is a pit bull to go after all violators of the law and the corrupt in DC.

Mueller probably knew this would happen. I just hope he has his next indictments ready to go NOW.

Obstruction, that's all this is. Simply because he recused himself of the Mueller special counsel investigation.

If there’s nothing to hide, why the fear? I don’t like Sessions even a little bit, but where is the loyalty Trump so seems to value? Sessions has put up with bullying from his boss for the duration of his position. I’m not surprised by this. And I suppose I shouldn’t be appalled either. It’s so consistent.

To my representatives oppose this as he’s only seeking someone more willing to help him obstruct Justice. Like say...... his initials are Linsey Graham. Scandalous indeed. The blue wave is coming again - last nite we took the Congress. 2020 we come for Trump and the Senate.

Really don’t understand Sessions. He has acted out of character since taking this job. He was my Senator for many years. Recusing himself was the same as just not doing his job. There was no reason to recuse himself. Very disappointed in him. I do hope the president’s new pick will put some people in jail where they belong. I won’t hold my breath though. It seems none of them ever go to jail or pay taxes.

Trump wants the Attorney General to personally protect him. The Attorney General works for the citizens of the United States. It is not the president’s personal lawyer. Trump must be stopped from trying to end the Russia investigation. Sessions’ letter stated that his resignation was a request from trump. Legislators need to do their job and protect American citizens, by protecting the Mueller investigation.

It's apparent Sessions was forced to resign as his resignation letter began with, "At your request, I submit my resignation..." And trump's replacement, Matthew Whitaker, is a GOP partisan who wrote a CNN op-ed last year saying the Mueller investigation was going too far and that Rosenstein should order Mueller to limit it. So just like with the Kavanaugh (who believes trump should not be investigated or indicted) appointment, Whitaker's placement is only to slow and/or obstruct and/or end the Mueller investigation... all in trump's favor. Of course.

Even though I do not support sessions on a lot of issues but this is a blatant attempt by 45 to get rid of the Russia investigation. 45 is now scared cause dems have the house that is what this is about. What a mockery our government has become.

Please educate yourselves (e.g. Donna), there is no law against “appointing” temporarily, a replacement for a vacant position. That is why they call it ‘Acting’ AG. When The President nominates a permanent replacement for Session’s position of Attorney General, THEN and only then does it move through the confirmation process. Do you not see that a government department would not function at all unless someone was placed at the helm in an Acting position at least temporarily? All you display is your ignorance and hate of Trump when you go use the “Dictatorship,” argument. President Trump acted accordingly and waited until after the election. Sessions should never have recused himself in the 1st place. This resignation was long overdue.

President Trump continues to lie and steal from the American people. This is now a move to undermine and obstruct justice in his collusion with the Russians. Steve Russell was replaced last night because of his lack of a backbone in doing the right thing. Now Langford and Inhoffe will be next unless they stand up and do the right thing.
