Here’s How You Can Ensure the Election Is Fair

by Countable | Updated on 11.5.18

  • Federal election observers will be in 35 communities in 19 states on Election Day to “monitor compliance with the federal voting rights laws." That leaves a lot of polling places open for potential voting shenanigans.
  • That’s why Countable is deputizing you, the American public, to serve as citizen monitors. We created Countable because we believe in democracy and the democratic process, and we want to make sure everyone who has the right to vote casts their ballot on Tuesday.
  • Here’s a cheat sheet of what you need to know to make sure you, and others, can exercise your right to vote…

When and Where to Vote

  • Polling places open at 6 or 7 a.m. and close at 7 or 8 p.m. in most states. Double-check here.
  • If you can’t make it to your assigned location, you may be able to cast a provisional ballot (more on this below).
  • Forgot to register? In 17 states and D.C., you can register on Election Day. Check if your state is one of the 17 here.

What to Bring to the Polls

  • Not all states require a photo ID to vote. To find out whether you need your ID, and what kind of ID you should pack, head to Countable’s Voter Center.

What to Do If You’re Turned Away

  • Even if you don’t have a valid form of voter ID, your registration is pending, or you find you’ve been purged from the voting rolls, you are still allowed to cast a provisional ballot.
  • Federal law requires that nearly every state must provide these “challenge ballots” or “affidavit ballots” to eligible voters.
  • Some states may, instead, have you sign a sworn statement saying you meet your state’s voting requirements and allow you to cast a regular ballot.
  • Remember, your right to vote is protected by federal law:
“If an individual declares that such individual is a registered voter in the jurisdiction in which the individual desires to vote and that the individual is eligible to vote in an election for Federal office, but the name of the individual does not appear on the official list of eligible voters for the polling place or an election official asserts that the individual is not eligible to vote, such individual shall be permitted to cast a provisional ballot...” §15482, CHAPTER 146, TITLE 42 OF THE 2009 UNITED STATES CODE

What Counts As Voter Intimidation?

  • Aggressively questioning citizenship or voting qualifications.
  • Individuals falsely claiming to be election officials.
  • Spreading false information about voting requirements.
  • Harassing would-be voters, especially non-English speakers and voters of color.

Filing a Complaint

If you experience voter intimidation, contact:

  • The Election Protection Hotline: 1-866-OUR-VOTE or 1-888-VE-Y-VOTA (en Español)
  • The U.S. Department of Justice Voting Rights Hotline: 800-253-3931; TTY line 877-267-8971
  • Local and state officials, including poll workers; your county clerk, elections commissioner, elections supervisor; or your state board of elections

Funny that the republicans are suppressing voters rights while complaining about unfair elections.

100% of this problem comes from the right. We are watching, we won’t forget.

There's no good reason not to vote. It's the most important part of being a citizen, and if we don't do it we give up our rights. Be strong and get out there!

Thanks! Now let’s be sure our friends and neighbors can exercise their Right to Vote! I wish there was something I could do to help those folks in Dodge City, KANSAS get to the new polling place a mile outside the city limits the Election Administrator purposelessly set up to obstruct the 13,000 mostly Hispanic people from voting tomorrow. I pray for a miracle where massive numbers of vehicles appear to ferry prospective passengers to and from the new polls out there in nowhere land.

Talk to me when it’s figure out how three counties in California have over 100% voter registration. People who are not legal Americans are voting and being given someone else’s voting credentials. This needs to be stood up to and stopped!

The easiest way to ensure fair elections is to have all of the voting done on just one day. The only exception is military personnel. Each voter casts a countable paper ballot and dips one finger in ink so that they can’t vote twice. Every voter must have a photo ID and be a citizen of the United States of American. Election Day should be a paid Federal Holiday for all working citizens with proof of voting.

Thanks for the info. Not sure 35 communities in this entire nation is enough and how do we trust the election officials?? In Georgia there were 647 votes in a district with only 247 registered voters.

One way and it’s the most important way is to have everyone show their ID when they go and vote. That would probably stop 80% of fraudulent votes.

I voted early and feel certain enough that my vote was secure and counted appropriately. As I am visiting out of town I heard on the news last night of an incident where the DNC tried to hack into early voter info but were unsuccessful. If one wasn’t paying attention they would miss hearing this. However, I have had a concern all along that people should be more concerned with Democrats hacking and meddling into the voting process and to rig the elections. It’s the Democrats not Russia or China we should be concerned with voter meddling. I hope voting monitors and officials are monitoring closely.

GREAT NEWS 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 We need to see more LEGAL CITIZENS registered to vote 🗳 11*6. I’d still be concerned 😧 for THREE key important points on the increased number being registered: 1). Voter Suppression is nothing more than a typical Democratic scare tactic attempting to cover their failing political agendas. 2). That the folks getting registered are, in fact, U.S. Natural citizens or legal Naturalized citizens. 3). That we are not seeing folks registering in miltiple locations fraudulently to place multiple votes illegally. 4). I’m all for seeing a record 2018 Voting 🗳 number of LEGAL VOTERS being set. 11*6*18 ..... SneakyPete.....

I doubt it will do any good. I remember when complaints were filed in Philadelphia when Black Panthers were intimidating white voters in 2008. Obama’s AG, Holder, refused to prosecute.

Make all voting by mail. Advantages 1) it has a paper trail. 2) no need for any long lines, 3) it is cheaper than traditional voting

For the last several years I’ve noticed that the only ones saying “Get out and vote” are Dems and Libs. I have yet to see, read or hear Republicans promoting this. I wonder why? I researched and found that there are many more registered Democrats than Republicans. I wonder...

Only the American public can ensure free and fair elections. Quite obviously we can’t rely on the White House or Congress, or even the States to ensure fairness.

Democraps will look the other way just to get illegal immigrant votes. I don’t think the liberal left give a damn about corruption in the polling place. Why do you think they are funding the caravan of illegal immigrants.

Georgia is already engaging in voter intimidation by employing armed black panthers to support the black Democrat female who is running for Governor. The Black Panther also intimidated Republican voters in Philadelphia when Barack Obama first ran for president in 2008. I know many Republicans who live in West Philadelphia and who vote; but not a single Republican vote was counted in Philadelphia in 2008. Attorney General, Eric Holder, said he didn’t want to investigate his own people, so nothing was done about black on white voter suppression in Philadelphia in 2008. You can bet our current president will not let such shenanigans pass, no matter what the color or the precinct.

Paper ballots, hand counted, double checked. Also, allow all citizens to vote. Voter ID laws are designed to suppress the vote of poor people and people of color. Washington State has already fixed many of the issues with voting. Let’s follow suit across the country.
