Much like the way to a person’s heart is through their stomach, the way to a lawmaker’s ear is through their staffers. Why? Because staffers are the eyes and ears for their bosses. They’re the ones answering phone calls and answering emails. So, get cozy with the staffers at your lawmaker’s district office. Make sure that you’re making a personal connection with the people whose job it is to know and understand the constituency. Invite staffers to community events. If you’re part of an advocacy group, show them the work you’re doing. Keep in mind that staffers are probably from your community and familiar with it. You can also talk to staffers in person at the district office.
Now, whether you’re part of a group or you’re an individual, share your personal stories, your perspectives, your knowledge. Help them understand how specific legislation and policy affects your community. See what’s going on here? Staffers have a lot of influence over lawmakers. So now you know who to really talk to. Have you made a connection with a staffer? If so, how did you do it? Let us know in the comments.
