While the votes won't be formally tallied until January 6, the Electoral College has chosen Republican businessman Donald Trump to serve as the 45th President of the United States. Trump won 306 electoral votes on Election Night, and was boosted over the 270 vote threshold today when electors from the state of Texas cast their ballots. The tally now stands at 304 votes for Trump, 227 for Hillary Clinton, and 7 for other candidates.
There had been speculation amidst revelations of Russia's interference in the presidential election that enough voters might become faithless electors to deny Trump the presidency. A number of electors had requested an intelligence briefing prior to casting their ballots today, but that request was denied by the Director of National Intelligence.
Only two electors who were slated to vote for Trump defected, with two Texans casting votes for Ron Paul and John Kasich instead. Faithless electors have also cut into the tally of his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton, as four of Washington state's 12 electors who opted to vote for other candidates instead of her (three for Colin Powell and one for Faith Spotted Eagle). Clinton also lost an elector from Hawaii, who opted to cast their vote for Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).
For Trump to have been denied, 37 electors would've had to abandon him for Clinton or another candidate, and if no candidate received 270 votes then the House of Representatives would've been tasked with electing the president.

I think we knew there was almost zero chance of anything changing, but it still stings.
We now begin our focused opposition to fascism. While the white supremacists and nativistic claim victory we are setting up our actions. There is no landslide here. Watch the fun begin!
Not my precedent
I can't tell if this is a bad joke or our worst nightmare....
Like it or not, Trump is our new president. That doesn't mean that we the people just lay down and whine. We stand up and fight!! We fight with everything in our power and we continue to be vigilant in our endeavors. We can change the course of this country! We have to speak as one entity.
A very sad day for this country
God Bless America! Time to Make America Great Again!
A sad day in the US. Clearly the election system is broken. Foreign interference, agency interference and the winner of the election doesn't take office. Things are s mess for us and the world.
This is a catastrophe. It is OBVIOUS that he is in league with Russia. The FBI and CIA confirm their interference. The democrats have to show more might. If the roles were reversed and Clinton was the beneficiary of Russian interference, had lost the popular vote by 3 million, and had a pile of conflicts of interest adding up, the Republicans would be doing EVERYTHING in their power to stop it.
You liberals are such pant wetters!!! Just calm down... forget the propaganda you were force-fed by the media during the election and the nonsense you learned from your socialist college professors and you will realize he's not as scary or nearly as bad for our liberty and freedom as the "H word" would have been. She and all her friends in the media did a heck of a job scaring the sheep in this country. Stop being sheep and relax. It will be an interesting 4 years. I'm very optimistic and so is the majority of our country. And stop bringing up the popular vote! The popular vote is used in places like Cuba and Venezuela and look how it's working out for them! Thank God all the people imported into California from Third World countries that don't have a clue about what America is all about weren't able to override the will of the majority of states. It's so funny how they come from screwed up countries because they know this is the greatest country on earth but they have a no clue why our country is so great so they insist on making it more like the hell hole they came from. How stupid is that?
How about instead of resisting him and creating a problem (even though he's not my #1 pick) work WITH him to make sure he doesn't screw up the country. If you're not part of the solution you're part of the problem.
I am totally in line with The TRUMP Presidency and now are hoping that this Country repeals ALL the trash rules and regulation and laws that were put in place during the last 8 years.
Awesome! Thank You! It's what I expected. Would be a huge disaster if it went "the other way". Just thought to formally drop a line saying thank you to the electors for settling their previous vote, and thank you to countable for announcing it.
This is exactly the situation that our Electoral College was meant to deal with - an incompetent, foreign-influenced demagogue being elected president by a minority of voters. Unfortunately, the electors chose to be spineless instead of faithless.
I'm happy someone voted for Ron Paul, but I'm sick and tired of seeing liberals cry. Is it really that hard to admit he's the next president? As a libertarian I had to deal with Obama's over regulation but did I say "he's not my president"? I'll give you a hint I did not. If Hillary was elected she would have been my president, I just wouldn't have supported her. You can't pout because you didn't get what you wanted, you aren't six. Too all the conservatives, a simple statement: Voters are watching. You control everything. Don't mess it up or it won't happen again.
Donald Trump is not even a Republican.
My name is David Adams and I am ashamed and appalled that the electors that demanded an intelligence briefing were swiftly denied. As electors, they have the right to be briefed on the integrity of the system that governs them. This is our fundamental right as Americans; to challenge our government when they step outside the bounds of what is deemed acceptable. When they begin to abuse the power that we give to them in confidence. The power that we give to them by electing them and entrusting that they will uphold our democracy and its process. #standup
Congrats Diablo Trump, I hope you and Pence fail miserably! I'm disgusting!
As a queer Latina woman I'm saddened by this decision and afraid for what these next years 4 will bring for myself, my friends, my family and the world. But I am also ready to fight tooth and nail to ensure that my rights and the rights of all marginalized groups in this country are upheld and heard. Love will always trump hate.
I am incredibly disappointed in the people that we, the citizens of the United States of America, entrusted with this responsibility. I sincerely hope this is not looked back upon as a catastrophic disregard for the well being of country.
