The Daily Countable: Real Climate Change + Who Should & Shouldn't be Allowed to Buy a Gun?

by Countable | 11.7.17

Good day, friends, and thank you again for staying bright & engaged with our democracy. Countable is here to help.

On the Radar

  • In the wake of the massacre of 26 people in a small Texas church on Sunday, the U.S. Air Force says it failed to flag the alleged gunman in national background-check databases. Here's a primer on which offenses disqualify a person from buying a gun. What do you think?
  • President Trump has called climate change a "hoax," but numerous government scientists conclude that it is real and that humans are its only plausible primary cause.

Can’t believe Trump said “more people would have died if there were tougher gun laws “ —— the heroes in the truck would have still had their rifles with tougher gun laws!!! The shooter would not have been able to get a semiautomatic weapon so easy with tougher gun laws!!! So sorry that the president is such a dumb ass.

The questions abound from Sunday’s church shooting. The ones I haven’t heard are: 1. Why is the public allowed to have semi and automatic assault weaponry? The only thing you can hunt with them are humans, as that is their purpose! And since mr illustrious signed an executive decision to allow the military to sell its weaponry to the public, this question is at the forefront! And 2: if now is not the time, considering there are mass shootings every day, (93-100 people are killed daily by guns, mostly women and children, yes check the research!), there will never be a time! It takes strong, clear headed thinking to say enough is enough and ignore the gun lobby who is part of the swamp he said he’d drain. If you always do what you’ve ALWAYS done, why expect a different result! Morons!

Are you leftists/idiotic people blind? The last two mass shootings were committed by people who shouldn't have owned a gun. The government failed in that background check so why is the solution to make even more laws? The gov., in this case, is big and inefficient so why would we make it even more big and even more inefficient. And guess what? The shooter was stopped by an NRA member with an Semi Automatic assault rifle. You people are idiotic to think that if you ban assault rifles then it will solve the mass shooting "problem". If you ban it then it only prevents the good citizens from owning it. Do you think that a bad person or criminal cares if it's banned? No. He will still obtain it and you want to know why? Because they are BAD people. Murder is illegal but that doesn't stop bad people from committing it. Very sad to see the ignorance on the left in regards to this topic. Btw, THE LAST TWO MAJOR MASS SHOOTINGS WERE COMMITTED BY LIBERAL ATHEISTS!!! Shame on you people for trying to deny us our rights!!!!!

We must do something about mass shootings, easy access to high power weapons & mental health needs for our citizens. Please take a serious look at these issues & how we can minimize/eliminate these events. This is a travesty for our country & little action seems to be being taken. Surely we have people here who can work on this problem with meaningful results. Other countries don't have this problem.....can't we see what they are doing? Please.....there have been too many innocent deaths as a result of gun violence.

Countable, I would like option to turn off the mandatory notification of my Reps, including Cory Gardner, when casting my vote. He may have sworn an oath to serve Coloradans but Gardner is just another party-line republican working for 45. His emails are spam, full of flowery promises with back door agendas. I don’t want to hear from him until I have evidence or his actions changing or he leaves office.

A gun has never jumped off a table and shot someone! The Dems always seek to take a tragedy and make it political. If they really cared they would clean up Chicago and reduce the crime rate! Clean up the local administration and talk about the current death rate they seem to accepted as a basic truth. Clean and organize your backyard before you try to rewrite the bill of rights!

Get off the man made climate change crap! All these goofs are saying that we need to erase our carbon foot print. Think about it? Carbon Foot Print? Really? Everything! Just about every element in the Universe beaks down to one simple element and that is Carbon! Gases, Rocks and all living things from plants to creatures in the water to animals in the forests and roaming the plains and yes finally Human Beings! Everything was created with Carbon the most basic and first most element any where! What is Carbon? Basically its ashes! In the good book our creator says From Ashes you came and to Ashes you shall returns! So my question is. How do we erase a Human Carbon foot print when we already are carbon? So let me present another question. As all animals are Carbon as well then they leave a print in something somewhere. So then we should erase the Animal Carbon Foot print as well! Hey it's all Carbon! Coal is pure carbon but useful for many things we need for survival! Diamonds come from compressed Coal / Carbon! I know many of you have jewelry with compressed carbon on it! So? Give me an answer? As for C02 emissions then tell tropical countries to quit cutting down rainforests as most of the world's oxygen comes from there! Acid emissions! Look at volcanoes around the world and there are many! That's Sulfuric Acid! Ok? Now think!

Co2 is necessary for the health of the planet. Without or reduced Co2, photosynthesis would be reduced or eliminated. Without photosynthesis, no oxygen would be produced and therefore no life!! The planet earth is greening up even with the higher concentrations of Co2. Live with higher Co2 concentrations or die with the rest of the planet. Co2 does not create global warming. It is the heavy cloud cover that prevents heat from escaping!

The pro-gun people really need to come up with better arguments than "Don't make guns laws tougher because criminals don't follow the law." No kidding. Why have any laws at all with that logic? What is your solution? Don't worry gun nuts. If Congress did NOTHING about guns after the Sandy Hook tragedy, they will continue to do nothing no matter how many lives are lost. We will see more preventable mass shootings. More lives lost.

From what I heard the shooter wasn’t supposed to be able to pass a background check to purchase guns. The Air Force failed to add the proper information in their data base that would’ve made him unable to pass a background check.

I am appalled by the selfish tax revisions being rushed through by our Republican legislators. The President, from what we can tell by his tax records that were released, stands to personally benefit by tens of millions of dollars through the removal of the Alternative Minimum Tax. Actual middle class taxpayers (people making less than $70K a year) will see their taxes go up, and the poor will see only temporary benefits. Tax breaks popular with the middle class are going away, while corporate tax breaks are being strengthened and the estate tax eliminated. It’s estimated charitable donations to nonprofits (already harmed by fewer government grants) will dry up. Meanwhile, the wealthy (over $250K annually) will see their taxes steadily decrease. I’ve been in the upper 2% of incomes nationally as well as in the lower 10%. I am always happy to pay taxes when I made more because I understand my privilege. Any tax reform needs fewer corporate loopholes, strong taxes on “found” money like large inheritances for individuals (over ($100K in cash), deductions for charitable giving, and realistic taxes on those making less than $100k a year. The wealthy should not benefit financially on the backs of those who are less well off.

Rep. Brooks, Senators Donnelly and Young, please work tirelessly to promote peace in our communities through bans on military/style assault weapons, large capacity magazines, bump stocks and the sale of any gun to mentally ill people. You are abdicating your role to keep Americans safe. Where is the OUTRAGE? What level of carnage will it take for you three to ACT?

If we can't get anywhere on banning automatic weapons or bump stocks, in the very least push for a better database of gun ownership and gun deaths. All cars need to be registered and all drivers need a license, apply these same standards to guns. If it can't be done at a national level, twist the arms of states to keep better databases. Make it illegal to own an unregistered gun. Do something, anything.

We have focused so much on the last clause of the 2nd Amendment (right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed) that we have forgotten the first clause, the one about the well-regulated militia. It’s time to make sure that all gun owners are well-regulated. Getting a permit for a gun should be, at a minimum, as hard as getting one for a car. One should need to have a license and pass a competency test. And the gun should have safety features equivalent to those in cars, including built-in trigger locks, and features which make it impossible for someone who doesn’t own the gun to fire it.

Of course climate change is real. We need more scientists in government roles, not less. And gun control should be the norm. Why the hell do average citizens need access to heavy weapons? They don’t
