Sonny Perdue Says He Doesn't Plan to Extend Farm Aid Into 2019

by Axios | Updated on 10.30.18

Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue said Monday that his agency doesn’t plan to extend the up to $12 billion emergency relief package for farmers into 2019, Reuters reports. The aid, unveiled in July, was implemented to offset damages caused by President Trump’s trade war with China.

The details: Perdue told reporters that he’s monitoring market conditions, and that “farmers, even under financial duress, will make their best business decision for 2019 without the expectation of a marker facilitation program.” The USDA has so far allocated $6 billion to farmers, and Perdue said Monday that a second round of relief should be outlined by December.

Good. That is the correct answer. Government bailouts are not the answer to commodity market forces. Next end the farm subsidies for big ag. If corn was at its real price we wouldn’t have hfcs in every gd thing. Quit manipulating the market with the damn corporate welfare!

Do away with the 45 tariffs! He caused the farm problem, make him pay for the losses.

I am totally against this aid. I was in retail for over 40 years. If we bought 100,000 “widgets” and they failed to sell, we marked them down and cleared them out. Then we moved on to new and better products. No government subsidies. That!’s what capitalism is all about. The GOP can’t have it both ways. This money would be better spent on new schools.

As a liberal, I agree with this. Stop the government bailouts that were caused by the mistakes of this administration. Let the farmers hurt and realize that supporting this administration was a major mistake. They voted against their own best interests, now they need to correct the mistake with their votes in upcoming elections. More people in ‘‘this country need to start acting like adults and be held accountable for their actions (votes) through consequences (tough financial situations based on those votes).

Farmers get aid not because anyone is doing them any favors! They still get the short end of the stick simply because politicians and vested interests distort the ‘landscape’ - a free market! Chemical companies / seed companies / politicians / corporates / conglomerates all collectively distort things to the farmers peril and add to that climate change. Be thankful for the food on your table. Educate yourselves before you denigrate farmers with a broad brush. Yes most voted for moron probably more out of desperation! Not knowing that he was just a snake oil conman. Now they will know .... hopefully!

Oh, sure. Don't help the farmers feed us. Make it impossible for them to keep their family businesses alive. Clear the space for a few more Trump Towers.

I have to support ending the bailouts. But, it’s because we need to end farm subsidies that artificially lower shelf prices and increase taxes. Farmers want to grow and sell. We need to make that the method of production.

There should be no bailouts of any kind for anyone farmers or corporations or banks. If bad decisions are made then we all need to learn to live with the consequences of those bad decisions or change the circumstances, in this case the tariffs. We could either get rid of the tariffs which have had the opposite desired effect or get rid of those who imposed the tariffs.

Unfortunately, the key words here are 'does not plan to' continue. This sycophant, like the rest of the 'best people' hired by djt, will do whatever he tells them to do. As the nasty, degrading campaign season kicks off and still no trade deal or relief for these hard-working Americans, djt will protect his self-perceived 'base' by throwing money at them, if necessary. Anyone counting on Social Security or Medicare - benefits for which any working American has already paid - and not yet retired, should seriously consider becoming a farmer or rancher during the age of djt. At least you will get SOME of your hard-earned tax dollars back before the GOP and Mitch decide to give them ALL away.

The aid, unveiled in July, was implemented to offset damages caused by President Trump’s trade war with Canada, Mexico, China and Europe. The farmers may have voted for Trump and reaped the results of their votes, but in saying this, it is in the interests of the of America to support them even if their vote as a bad one. May be they will vote differently next time and think about the out come to America interests and out come? They were sold a a bridge to no where by a snake oil salesmen!

What is interesting, is that Capitalists have stated that a Free Market will correct itself and address ALL of societal issues. And Conservatives do not believe in entitlements and welfare. Yet when they make huge negligent errors and are going to lose a lot of money, Republicans/Conservatives/ Capitalists believe they are entitled to Government bailouts so they do not lose money. This in effect, is socialism, entitlement, and Corporate welfare. Your Fiat Capitalism model does not function like you say it will and it causes more problems that it addresses and the ultimate losers, are the Citizens, who pay the ultimate price, so Capitalists can live like Kings and Queens off the backs of the middle class and the poor.

This mess was another created by DJT. Until these ridiculous tariffs are done away with the aid needs to remain available to our farmers.

Farmers you voted for this moron and blindly took took his bait hook line & sinker! Certainly not a surprise as moron and his crew have no clue about the long term ramifications of his actions let alone short term! So if you are still thinking that you are ok to take one more year of pain and things will reorder themselves .....you are in for a rude awakening. China and others are already racing ahead to permanently alter the trading landscape including direct currency swaps outside the dollar. Salvage what you can NOW by replacing this uneducated self serving mob or say goodbye to your farms and lifestyle! Sad but true!

Totally agree with this. The rest of working class, if employer runs out of work, we get laid off. So if you have a crop failure for some legitimate reason you to can get unemployment. But you would have to pay into it like our employers do.

The whole issue with farm aid economically is this... To insure this Nation has an Abundant and Safe Food supply to meet our needs of the population of this country. If you disagree with this, don't support any tariffs, or aid to farmers, or farm programs.

I live in a community where farming is abundant. Trust me the farmers will be fine, they don’t need welfare. The days of the “poor old farmer” have done past. I sure there are some small farming outfits out there hanging on out of pride and family legacy, but they need to sell and let it go. The corporate farmers are here to stay... like Walmart.
