Jeff Flake Announces Retirement, Excoriates Trump
Join us and tell your reps how you feel!
What’s the story?
In a seventeen minute speech on the Senate Floor Tuesday Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ) announced his retirement, excoriated President Trump and took the entirety of the Republican party to task for what he called "complicity." Though others in the GOP — Bob Corker, John McCain and George W. Bush, have leveled similar criticisms at the president, Flake is the first one to call out party leaders.
There’s little else in the news today, and, as usual, Twitter is on fire.
There are those on the left who feel Flake’s stand is too little, too late:
Jeff Flake deserves about as much credit as a toddler newly able to identify colors. The GOP is deafeningly silent, and endlessly complicit.

Hero?
->Jeff Flake
While others on the left called on Flake to follow his words with actions to block Trump’s agenda:
Heartbreaking to see Jeff Flake’s Name here. White man speak with fork tongue! https://t.co/rnkPCzcNsk

Guys, @SenBobCorker and @JeffFlake are not heros for calling out @realDonaldTrump's BS.

They STILL vote for 45's agenda.#TheResistance
If McCain, Corker, and Jeff Flake want to stop Trump, they should LEAVE HIS PARTY.

52 Republicans in Senate
52 - 3 = 49 = no more majority
susan collins has done far more than jeff flake to oppose trump without making a single grandstanding speech about it tbh

On the right, some were jubilant and insisted Flake only retired because he couldn’t win re-election:

It's funny how Jeff Flake & Bob Corker, who BOTH aren't going to run in 2018 because they're losers, have nasty words for President Trump.

While many on both sides applauded the senator’s words:
History will be kind to @JeffFlake, even while it excoriates those in his party enabling Trump to tear apart our country & its institutions.

.@JeffFlake is a true conservative, an outstanding senator and a cherished friend. My statement on his announcement today: pic.twitter.com/SIgVzieEXL
— Senator Bob Corker (@SenBobCorker) October 24, 2017
The Senate will be worse off without @JeffFlake's honesty, integrity and willingness to speak his mind.

It’s been one of the great honors of my life to serve w/ @JeffFlake– a man of integrity, honor, decency & commitment to Arizona & the nation pic.twitter.com/DOHAoHx0d2

What do you think?
Was it a speech for the ages? Should Flake have stayed in the fight and run for re-election? Do his votes for the next 14 months need to counter the president for his words to matter? Are you glad he’s leaving? Or do you fear what his leaving signals about the direction of the GOP?
