Pew: Nearly Six-in-Ten Americans Say Abortion Should Be Legal in All or Most Cases – Where Do You Stand?

What’s the story?
- The latest Pew Research Center political survey finds 58 percent of Americans say abortion should be legal in all or most cases, while 37 percent think abortion should be illegal in all or most cases.
- As expected, views on abortion divide Americans across partisan, ideological, and religious lines.
What’s the breakdown?
- 59 percent of Republicans say abortion should be illegal in all or most cases.
- 76 percent of Democrats say abortion should be legal in at least most cases.
- 60 percent of women and 57 percent of men say the procedure should be legal in all or most cases. (By political party: 78 percent of Democratic women and 73 percent of Democratic men say abortion should be legal in all or most cases; 42 percent of Republican men and 34 percent of Republican women say the same.)
- 61 percent of white evangelical Protestants think abortion should be illegal in all or most cases. Catholics are somewhat more divided: 51 percent say abortion should be legal in all or most cases and 42 percent say it should be illegal.
- 61 percent of whites and 60 percent of blacks say that abortion should be legal in all or most cases. Among Hispanics, 49 percent support legal abortion while 44 percent say it should be illegal in all or most cases.
- 63 percent of adults under the age of 30 say abortion should be legal in all or most cases, as do 59 percent of adults in their 30s and 40s. Around 56 percent of those in their 50s and 60s say the same.
