Trump Decertifies Iran Nuclear Agreement, Puts Deal’s Fate in Congress’s Hands

by Countable | 10.13.17

Citing violations of the spirit of the agreement, President Donald Trump announced in a speech at the White House on Friday that he is decertifying the Iran nuclear deal and asking Congress to decide whether or not sanctions should be reimposed on the regime. He also outlined a broader strategy to counter Iran’s "destabilizing activities" which includes sanctioning the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (a branch of Iran’s military) for its support of terrorism.

The move by the Trump administration falls short of abandoning the nuclear deal — which was agreed to by former President Barack Obama in 2015 but not ratified as a treaty — and puts its fate into the hands of Congress. Under the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act of 2015, Congress required that the president certify Iran’s compliance with the nuclear agreement.

With the ball squarely in their court, lawmakers now have three courses of action to choose from over the next 60 days:

  • They could move to re-impose the sanctions on Iran that were lifted by the nuclear deal, which could effectively kill the agreement in the eyes of Iran’s regime.

  • They could make changes to the law by adding provisions that would trigger the re-imposition of sanctions if certain lines are crossed — like if Iran reaches a nuclear "breakout" period.

  • They could do nothing and allow the terms of the nuclear agreement to stand as they are.

Senate Republicans have already outlined a possible legislative solution that would fall under the second of the above options. Senators Bob Corker (R-TN) and Tom Cotton (R-AR) released a framework for potential legislation on Thursday they say wouldn’t conflict with the existing terms of the Iran nuclear agreement while setting conditions to stop Iran’s nuclear program. It would:

  • Automatically snapback U.S. sanctions if Iran goes under a one-year "breakout" period in which they could rapidly develop a nuclear weapon.

  • Improve the power of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to verify that weapons activities aren’t being carried out at Iranian facilities, as Iran has tried to limit their access.

  • Limit Iran’s advanced centrifuge program, as such centrifuges allow for the enrichment of nuclear material to a weapons-grade level at a faster pace.

Is Iran a problem? Yes. However, the nuclear deal is being kept by Iran so it should not be decertified. We can continue to work with other nations to change their behavior. but that would take a true leader in the Oval Office, not someone who keeps passing the buck to Congress so he always has someone else to blame.

Inpeach and remove this president from power before he further destroys America's limited standing in the world. His erratic behavior and constant need for loyalty and praise is a clear sign of his unfitness for the office he current holds.

Please keep The Iran Agreement. It is imperative to move the world in a stable, peaceful direction and not lose our influence in the Middle East. Please do not allow Trump to continue to destabilize the world and reduce the authority of the United States. Thank you.

So, Members of Congress are going to continue to sit on their hands and allow Trump to dismantle all that is right and sensible about America. We WILL turn you out! Remember that, contrary to his own delusions, Trump did not win the majority of our votes!

It’s time to invoke Artificial 25 of the constitution and remove Trump from office. Clearly he is incompetent and has just put the world in danger with his arrogance.

The Iran nuclear deal was poorly designed and negotiated to the advantage of a rogue terrorist state. It never was approved by Congress. Great move for world peace.

The agreement with Iran should have never happened. To have paid them money up front was insane. Iran is a country whose government cannot be trusted and who are known to treat their people terribly, especially women. All they do is at the expense of their people and other countries. Trump is absolutely correct in stopping this. It’s a terrible shame that money has been paid to them. That is money that could have been better used going to the victims who have suffered and continue to suffer in the recent disasters. With Iran being the hostile country that it is, the US should have nothing to do with this country. Like North Korea, we must keep a watchful and cautious eye on them.

As usual most of the comments here are from emotionally driven Trump haters who know very little about the facts and the Islamic culture we’re dealing with. Look it’s simple Obama screwed the American people by ram ridding something through that he had know right doing without the congressional review process. Iran extremists currently running the country have one thing in mind which is all infidels must die to appease Allah. They’ll placate us by entertaining these wasteful discussions as a BS cover story while they work at a fevered pace in the background toward becoming a nuclear power. Once they achieved their goal the tables will be turned on us and our allies in concert with North Korea. Yes this could then become the start of WWIII which is why we have to show them we see through their fake commitments they never intended to keep. Kerry and Obama were idiots giving them all the money they did. These are radical Islamics looking for a holy war. I say Trump made the right decision and now we’ll see what Congress does. I bet they will be paralyzed with indecision as usual and the deal will default in the end.

Are you freaking kidding me. Obama completely violated the US Constitution by creating this agreement without Congress. Again, dump the agreement, bury Iran with Sanctions before they become the next North Korea. Do your job. Uphold the Constitution of the United States. There is absolutely no viable reason to negotiate on any terms with this country.

Thank you. Another Obama legacy. He couldn’t get it through Congress where as a major agreement “the people’s house” should have had a voice. Instead Obama takes it to the UN. !!!???? The UN certainly has our interests at the forefront of its concerns. So now Trump appropriately throws it to Congress. As it is and has been it’s a bad deal and empowers Iran, and it’s goals to raise middle east instability and provides them a path to nuclear weapons. Remember the “side deals”? I wonder if we get any of the billions in cash Obama flew over to them in the dead of night?
