Does President Trump Need A Pet?

by Countable | 10.13.17

What’s the story?

There is a long, storied history of presidential pets, including cats, dogs, birds, horses, cows and even an alligator. Seriously, President John Quincy Adams had an alligator, and some silkworms. Clearly, he was not into cuddles.

When former President Obama didn’t have a pet it was considered practically unpresidential. But daughter Malia was allergic, so selecting the right breed was important. Portuguese water dog Bo Obama joined the family in 2009, and was followed by another Portuguese water dog, Sunny, in 2013.

Why does it matter?

Every president for the last 130 years has had pets of one kind or another. Modern presidents have tended towards dogs and, occasionally, cats. President Lyndon B. Johnson had a set of beagles, named Him and Her, who famously garnered Johnson unwanted criticism when he picked them up by their ears. The practice, insisted former President Harry S. Truman at the time, was standard, "What the hell are the critics complaining about; that's how you handle hounds."

But the most camera-worthy presidential pets in recent memory have to be President George W. Bush’s two Scottish Terriers, Barney and Mrs. Beazley, who were featured in a series of White House Christmas videos:

Presidential pets is a hallowed tradition, so we here at Countable want to encourage you to weigh in about what pet would best suit the Trumps. We’ve got some suggestions to get the discussion started.

A Dog

It’s a classic! But what kind? We’re fans of mutts, but we’re guessing pure breeds are more up the president’s alley. Say, a pitbull?

A Cat

The president has expressed a fondness for...kitties. You just reach out and touch them. They let you do it.

A Shark

If John Quincy Adams can have an alligator, why can’t Trump have a shark? He’s probably not using the White House pool anyway, and he doesn’t seem prone to track suits.

A Parrot

President James Madison had a parrot. They are long-lived, extremely intelligent and tend to repeat things they hear repetitively. President Trump could name it Twitter, the Tweeter-in-Chief. Fake News! Fake News! Fake News!

A Goat

It’s true that several presidents have counted goats among their pets, but I just wanted to include this gif. They could take care of the White House lawn, though.

So, what do you say, CountaCats?

Good god no. He can't take care of himself. Poor pet would surely be abused.

He has a pet, “his ego”. It’s big enough, needs a muzzle and should be kept on a very short chain in the back yard. Why inflict him on a cat, dog or even a gold fish. Maybe a poisonous snake? That would fit his personality traits.

Why are you even asking this question? My humor is almost non existent right now. Millions are about to lose health care. Children's health insurance has not been reauthorized, heat assistance has been reduced, trump refuses to address those who salute the Nazi Flag and continues to attack NFL players. He may revoke Iran deal. He is taunting N Korea and closing door on Cuba and wants a wall for Mexico. He won't help the Dreamers. Last but not least, he has this tax reform that does nothing but hurt most Americans and you want to know if he should get a pet? Really???

Sounds like most of you have egos, and every other insult that has been written down about President Trump If you read most of your opinions you are as worse if not more worse then you say he is. By acting like you are it only makes you littler and annoying, your all mad because a person (H.CLINTON) didn’t win the presidency even know she lied her ass off to all of you and was caught doing so. She cared only of her wallet. 1 example (Clinton foundation uranium deal Russia) but knowing all the lies. You all honestly would be happier if she was president. That argument is waisting our time to make America Better. So get on board pull your heads out of your asses and do good before another politician gets in office in 2020 or 2024 and more than likely will promise you something you will never get. Politicians lie and work the system for them selves. Way to many have proven that from the left & right. We have a business man in office that cares for two things business and America. That sounds pretty good to me.

I’d worry about the pet’s health with the First Lady and youngest son residing in NYC.

trump shouldn’t be allowed to have a pet. He is cruel and would probably abuse a pet as he does American people. Then he would try to abolish animal cruelty protections.

Are you kidding?! As little as he cares about the environment, nature and anything not of the Trump brand, that is a horrible idea! On the other hand, maybe a pet would humanize him -- but I wouldn't count on it. Think of the poor animal. One of his sons would probably shoot it and mount it on the wall. Uggh.

I voted shark. But in truth I would not want any animal subjected to life in the White House these days. That would be cruelty.
