The DC: ⛽ Trump orders the EPA to lift regulations on ethanol in gasoline, and... 📫 Should we privatize the post office?

by Countable | 10.12.18

Welcome to Friday, denizens...

"Saudi Arabia Must Say What Happened to Missing Journalist"

"Saudi Arabia Must Answer to Khashoggi Allegations"

"Khashoggi was murdered, Saudis did it, leading Republican says"

This random sampling of headlines are in reference to Jamal Khashoggi, a Saudi journalist who also wrote for the Washington Post. Khashoggi, who's been critical of the Saudi government, disappeared last week after visiting the country's consulate in Turkey.

Turkish officials believe Khashoggi was murdered inside the consulate. The Saudis deny this claim, but have not been able to provide any proof he safely left the building.

On Wednesday, top foreign policy lawmakers in the Senate - led by Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker and top Democrat Bob Menendez - enforced a law that requires President Trump to launch an investigation into Khashoggi's disappearance and to enforce sanctions against any individual found responsible for the matter.

Complicating matters: earlier this year, the State Department approved military arms sales to Saudi Arabia worth slightly over $1 billion.

Do you support a probe into the journalist's disappearance? Tell your reps here.

On the Radar

  • President Trump has ordered the EPA to ease regulations and allow for the sale of gasoline with ethanol year-round—farmers praise the move while the oil industry and environmentalists decry the decision. E15 - fuel made of 15 percent ethanol and 85 percent gasoline – is currently banned during summer months because of smog concerns. Republican Sen. John Thune of South Dakota, whose state's top industry is agriculture, called the decision a “true win-win solution.” But the National Wildlife Federation said "the limits exist in the Clean Air Act for a reason." Read that reason here.
  • Trump signed the Music Modernization Act into law at a ceremony at the White House on Thursday, joined by Kid Rock, Sam Moore of Sam & Dave, country singer John Rich, and the Doobie Brothers’ Jeff “Skunk” Baxter. The Orrin G. Hatch-Bob Goodlatte Music Modernization Act will update several provisions of U.S. copyright law regarding music licensing to reflect how digital music services operate while ensuring that royalties can be collected on pre-1972 recordings and by creative professionals. “You like this legislation or do you hate it?” Trump asked Kid Rock during the signing. “I like it,” replied Kid Rock. Read why Mr. Rock likes it here.

Under the Radar

  • Postal workers across the nation rallied on Monday to protest President Trump’s proposal to privatize the postal service. Under the proposal, the USPS would "transition to a model of private management and private or shared ownership." Walter Barton, president of the National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 6000 in Amityville, NY, criticized the plan, saying it would eliminate jobs and reduce the number of delivery days, hurting residents and small businesses that depend on daily delivery. Click here for the full story.
  • Senators cast their final votes in advance of the midterm elections on Thursday by confirming 15 federal judges and several executive branch nominees. The flurry of confirmations allows a number of senators in tight re-election battles to put their work in the Capitol behind them and hit the campaign trail. The chamber’s leaders, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), struck a deal to allow votes on the confirmation of roughly the number of judges that could’ve been confirmed between now and Election Day had the Senate remained in session and Democrats used the procedural roadblocks available to them. Read the full story here.
  • Abortion rights will be on the ballot in three states next month with voters in West Virginia, Alabama, and Oregon set to vote on whether their state constitutions provide the right to an abortion or allow taxpayer funding of abortions. For more on each ballot measure, click here.

Are you kidding me??? Is the question I ask everyday. America is finished. A journalist is dismembered and Trump cares more about $. Disgusting-anyone who supports him, supports terror. And no, leave the Post Office alone. It's working fine.

The human race is heading toward extinction and our Federal government must be a leader in saving us from Annihilation. But the president is only concerned about profits to the detriment of our ecology. He conveniently labels any news he doesn’t like as fake news.

We won’t save our planet by burning our food, we will do it through the use of alternative energy. This was a bandaid on a broken arm. The flex fuel cars will still take advantage of cheaper fuels (albeit lower efficiencies) and we can explore higher efficiency vehicles, alternatives like natural gas and electric. I didn’t buy my clean air vehicle because it was green but because it was a better option and a fun car, that’s how we will change the world.

From the most recent news accounts, this journalists death occurred in the Saudi embassy. I have heard there is video and audio of his murder as reported on major news networks last night. Americans were horrified by the beheadings of journalists, and too many others, by ISIS. Should we be any less outraged by the murder and possible dismemberment of this corespondent by the Saudi government? JaredKushner received a $100, 000,000 loan from Saudi royal family. Pres. Trump’s flagship hotel in NYC was under water until the Saudi Prince and his entourage stayed there. Is this why Trump is so soft on the Saudi government. It is time to call out the Saudi government for this barbaric act.

I want there to be a world left for my son to grow up in. Obviously you don’t. I vote. Every election. I want the environment protected and a life for my child, not money in your bank account. I’m so tired of lies.

Environmentalism has been taken over by extremists who vilify humans, placing extra emphasis on the United States and its citizens. We need to take back environmentalism from these fanatics and return to reasonable common sense solutions. The EPA should only serve as a research and advisory roll and return legislating to the legislature and hold its members accountable at election time for ALL of the laws they create.

The death of this journalist absolutely should be investigated, despite Trump’s “friendship” with the regime. This is probably why they felt they could do such a thing. And NO to privatizing the post office!

The science behind the ethanol mandate has been discredited in the years since its enactment. Requiring corn’s use in fuel is unwise; further subsidizing it to keep it competitive with gasoline is foolish. Let’s instead use those dollars to increase R&D funding, advancing technologies that make America more efficient and energy independent.

Ethanol is total politics at its worst. If Minnesota weren’t a farm state you would be against it. It’s more expensive creates more green house gases to create and doesn’t solve the real issue which is moving to energy independence through renewable green

So Trump is either actively trying to destroy the environment or is the stupidest, most selfish jackass to befoul our White House. At this point, does it even matter? The sooner he is out, the better. Maybe then we can repair our country and try to begin to fix that moron's divisive, bad decisions.

Let's not forget that almost all of the 9/11 attackers came from Saudi Arabia. Trump supporters have forgotten about 9/11. Traitors. And currently our bombs are being used to kill children in Yemen. How's that pro life?

Dear GOP, Stop trying to screw over our Postal System. For a Political Party that insists that it’s focus is on preserving the Constitution you sure are busy trying to find more ways to rip it up. The USPS was founded by Ben Franklin and actually is specifically mentioned in the Constitution. I’m pretty sure a functioning Postal System is vital to a functioning Nation. So Why are you trying to destroy it? You do realize Fed-ex and UPS DEPEND on the USPS to deliver a considerable percentage of their packages because they can’t even begin to meet the demand don’t you? Oops..so much for the Superiority of the Privatized Corporations over Government functions.
