On Sunday Vice President Mike Pence abruptly walked out of an NFL game between the Indianapolis Colts and the San Francisco 49ers early when some players took a knee during the national anthem. CNN reports that to add the Indianapolis leg to the Vice President's trip cost taxpayers approximately $242,500.
The Vice President's office issued an official statement to say that the trip had been on Pence's schedule for weeks:
But President Donald Trump tweeted that he had asked Pence in advance to leave if any players knelt:
Journalist Jake Tapper confirmed that press pool reporters were instructed to stay in their vans because the Vice President would likely be leaving early:
Lawmakers and celebrities hit Twitter with responses to the incident, but regular citizens have also filled Twitter since mid-day Sunday. Here are some statements by supporters of the Vice President's actions:
I am an US Army veteran and I thank you for standing up for the flag of our country.— David Weissman (@davidmweissman) October 8, 2017
Good for you buddy- nice display of dignity, poise, and respect! Well done!— Chuck Kerber (@ChuckKerber) October 9, 2017
The dishonest liberal media, their trolls & NFL attacked VP Pence & POTUS for this Brave walkout, but all decent people admire this bravery. pic.twitter.com/fS99abjnFT— EaglePundit 🔹 (@RealEagleBites) October 9, 2017
And here are some tweets opposing Pence's actions:
You don't even realize you're on a sinking ship. You're mad at the NFL? Really? But not the Nazi rally today?— M'Challa (@bayareavenus) October 9, 2017
So...you used the national anthem as a means of political protest, huh? 🤔— Anna Maltese 🏹 (@MalteseAnna) October 9, 2017
My soldier husband would have fought to protect the protesters but he's dead from Agent Orange, you disrespect his sacrifice.— doris jane franklin (@donewithorange) October 9, 2017
And one Twitter account took things to the next level, by composing a poem:
There is an old fellow named Pence— Limericking (@Limericking) October 8, 2017
Whose hobby is taking offence.
He does it some days
In gimmicky ways
As well as at public expense.
What do you think?
Was Vice President Pence right to walk out when players took a knee during the national anthem? Should he even have gone at all, given the likelihood of protests? Was this a principled stand or a publicity stunt?

Next time Pence or any other government employee wants to stage a protest, they should do it on their on time, on their own dime, and definitely they should not steal the limelight from a man who has and continues to do so much for the city of Indianapolis. That game included a celebration of Peyton Manning, retiring his jersey number and presenting a statue of him. Peyton Manning created a children’s hospital that he still visits and calls patients. Pence denied citizens of the state civil rights and banned refugees who are fleeing the destruction of their homes, cities and lives. Pence walked out, he claims, because he was offended by men peacefully protesting the killing of the young men of our nation. Does he think that there is a way that will bring the needed attention to this atrocity without hurting his feelings. Yes, I’m angry, and have been for a while. And I totally think that he should pay the American people back for his flight, security, and other costs incurred since this was obviously NOT government business.
This was just one big publicity stunt.
Pence only went to the Colts game to perform for the cameras and make more stupid drama for the reality show president. Pence’s moral stance and platitudes are no more believable than the noise from an announcer on an infomercial. He is a cardboard cutout who flatters Trump and is just as inept and despicable for his views about women and others. He came to politics from conservative talk radio-where he learned to spout a lot of words in a sincere voice. He disrespects the flag, the country, the military, the American people, the rule of law and the rights of citizens who don’t fit his narrow-minded viewpoints every day by his conduct in enabling and abetting this incompetent and dangerous man who is in the White House threatening national security.
VPOTUS had every right to protest the players disrespecting our flag by kneeling during the national anthem by leaving the stadium. This was not a political stunt by him. The stadium is a place for games not political protests.
Did The Vice President of the United States just protest the protesters? I absolutely support his right to protest, but not on my dime. (Estimated cost to taxpayers is $250,000.) Bill him and make pence pay for his publicity stunt!
Wasting my tax dollars on this photo op? Please refer this to the ethics review board They’re using this act as part of a campaign beg a thon Bull💩 My tax dollars are not to be spent on this crap Do your jobs Get our money back
What a waste of taxpayers money. I’m so tired of this corrupt, infantile administration and the GOP congress that refuses to act.
I would like to know where the "patriot" Pence was when Donald J Trump was disrespecting our military by attacking Senator John McCain. Where was Pence when Trump was disrespecting our military by attacking a Gold Star man and his wife? He was completely silent on the sidelines watching -- and apparently approving. Save me the hypocrisy. The NFL players are NOT disrespecting out military or the flag or the national anthem. They are kneeling in protest of the injustice in this country as it relates to the treatment African Americans by law enforcement. Donald J Trump brought the military, flag and anthem to reinforce the divide he is promoting in this country. This has now gone beyond the First Amendment straight to the total disrespect and disregard for the citizens. When will we all get tired of the hypocrisy? When will we see a refund of the $250K this latest stage event cost the taxpayers? Sick of it!!!! Cut programs and waste money on theatrics. Worse than even I could have imagined.
It’s really funny that Pence is throwing a tantrum because people are peacefully protesting the murder of black people but when literal nazis march- for the SECOND TIME, nothing is said or done...
I agree that he had every right as an American not to stay, but he also had every right not to go, especially at taxpayers expense. Furthermore it appears that he did it at urging of the President. I am personally more insulted by that. While we are at it, stop going to all these fund raisers, and just get the job done!!!!~
It was all one big reality TV show, just like this entire Administration.
For people who think that the kneeling is a protest against the American flag and the national anthem, they are misguided and miseducated. The protest is to gain equality, stopping the racial profiling. So, those who think it is anything but, are part of the problem, demonstrating their own privilege and racist views. Know what is fact. Pence and Trump are both racists, and are wasting tax payers money by promoting racism and increased police brutality.
Who's a good little lapdog? Pencey's a good little lapdog dog. Who's got a fuzzy tum tum? Pencey's got a fuzzy tum tum.
This was a well scripted divisive stunt worthy of a cheap reality show- not the freedoms this country was founded on. If not now when can people protest racism and abuse? Shame those who are oppressed and praise those who use the flag and their religion to do the oppressing? Disgraceful abuse of political!
Pence is exhibiting his own form of protest on tax dollars backs. This is not acceptable. I implore you to do everything possible to get rid of as many as possible in this administration. They are fast growing cancer that is destroying our country.
Every single one of you that is hollering about wasting dollars and attacking the Vice President is what is wrong with America. You hate this administration because you think they are the ones whom are racist, fascist, or bigots. Perhaps you should reread some of your comments and understand that this behavior is a human problem and not a political problem. It transcends all boundaries and labels. Wake up America, it’s OK to disagree without being hateful and spiteful.
Such an embarrassingly stupid and infuriatingly irresponsible farce. If Pence is going to engage in political theater, he needs to get a lot better at it. What a fool.
The Executive is focusing more on the NFL than actual issues.
NFL players should be REQUIRED to stand for OUR national anthem! What VP Pence did is a show of force. He respects our nation, and the people who died so we can have our rights. Just stand!
I would very much like Pence to repay the American people for the $1 million dollars he and trump wasted on this publicity stunt which was both racist and divisive in nature and served only to disgrace the military and their oath to the Constitution. This act was deplorable, undignified and a disgrace to the Oath of Office.
