The Daily Countable: Happy "Holiday Who Shall Not Be Named!"

by Countable | 10.9.17

Good Monday morning, friends -- and hey GUESS WHAT! Countable was featured on the iPhone App store over the weekend, and we rose to the top 5 news apps! Thank you so much for doing this with us!

Oh, and Happy Federal Holiday Which Shall Not Be Named. Whether you call it Columbus Day, Native American Day or Indigenous People's Day, it's likely you have some opinion about this very important issue. So tell us!

That's right, it's a federal holiday — meaning, while you're at work and many kids are in school, the Federal government is shut down. No Congress, no White House public schedule, no bustling federal departments.

BUT! There is no time to slack; there's A LOT going on this week, as you can see in Eric-the-bill-expert's weekly post, What's Congress Voting On? A few examples,

Pro-Tip: Wanna Reach Congress?Organize!

Now, I Gotta Question For Ya

Actually several questions that have been simmering in our editorial meetings recently. We're asking you these in separate posts today on Countable:

What do you think of entertainment mixing with politics?

Was Vice President Mike Pence's walk-out from an NFL game yesterday a proper flag-salute, or a stunt?

Should America still celebrate Columbus Day?

Find these stories, And More! as your local neighborhood Countable site & App. (Did I mention that we were featured in the App Store? 😉)

By the way, did you know we were featured in the App store?! (Ok, I'll stop.)

Columbus committed genocide, and didn’t discover anything. Why are we honoring him still? And there ARE plenty of people who are more deserving of have a day

We need to abolish this holiday and make Election Day a holiday. It’s time to correct history. Columbus did not discover America. You can’t discover an inhabited land.

How about doing away with this day a holiday and having a day off on Election Day instead that would make it easer for everyone to vote and make the lines go faster in stead of everyone hurrying to the poles after work🗽

This holiday should be named Indigenous Peoples Day. Columbus did not discover this continent. He did however lead to the colonization and genocide of this continent's original inhabitants.

Yes Columbus Day should be celebrated by those that want to celebrate this horrible human being, but Columbus Day should not be a day off for anyone. Especially people in Congress who barely work anyways.

Don’t judge people from other times by todays standards. We are as different from them as they were from Neanderthals.

Christopher Columbus is part and parcel of American history. His reaching the island of Cuba and America should not be erased. Rather Columbus brought with him Western culture, values and the Christian word to our shores. This was a great feat and worthy of praise. Those of Hispanic and Italian heritage are hurt by the group Antifa, whose members hate America.

I'll post the exact same thing I did on a picture of my Great grandmother about this: My Great grandmother circa early 1950's with her husband, and her first grand baby, my dad. Cene (pronounced See Knee) was alive until I was 11 years old I spent every summer with her in her little house in TEXAS We ran the streets, drank from the hose, climbed trees and skinned our knees in her front and back yard. She taught us lessons, sometimes painful ones... Cene was full blooded Cherokee, she was born on the cherokee nation in Oklahoma. Why am I telling you this? Simple, because it was a lesson she taught us; sometimes greatness is shadowed with pain. Now I'm super proud to have the blood of these people flowing through me even if only a drop, but the reality of thier greatness is this... My great grandmother was traded at age 12 to a man, then forced to marry. She had my grandfather at age 13 and was forced to do some pretty unthinkable things, her sisters were no different, they were property, yes even in the US in the 20's this was still happening. Cene was able to run away with my grandfather in the middle of the night, she came to TEXAS and lived on the streets until she met Tony, the man pictured. Her sisters lived on the reservation as subservient humans until they died. My point is this: these "great and noble men" that were "conquered by evil whites" weren't always as noble as history would like you to believe. The tribes fought, and slaughtered eachother for this land for a thousand years before Europeans ever stepped foot on this Continent. They murdered women and children for the same conquest that the Europeans did. Then they fought a war with the "white man" for another 200 years before they surrendered. I'm not saying that white Europeans didn't do some terrible things, but I am saying that the "indigenous peoples" were equally as ruthless. Celebrate whatever you want today, but remember your perspective on the matter is definitely skewed...

All these idiots that think Columbus committed genocide need to check their facts and go back to school. History says otherwise and if your too ignorant to check it out then don’t think you can erase or change it!

Everything I have ever learned about Cristopher Columbus was a LIE. It really makes me question what other things I was taught that is a lie. Please switch this day to indigenous peoples day

All I see is a bunch of leftist opinions. So what, if you don’t like the holiday, don’t recognize it. Some people don’t recognize Christmas either. Guess what they embrace the fact that it’s a holiday and they move on. All this is, is a bunch of cry babies that don’t know the full history and all they want to do is take down monuments, deface and destroy property, just to say they have a right. Get over it. Go to Chicago, Detroit and CA and do something that would actually have a cause, like protest the corrupt governments in those areas. The Gov’t that doesn’t do anything for the citizens except keeping them in poverty and create welfare and violent states. Protest how the left regime only wants your vote and when they get it, they forget about you and move on. They are the masters and you all are slaves. You all are to dumb to realize this and have been voting the same way for decades and look where it has landed you. Absolutely nowhere except to the feet of the masters. You bow to them, they manipulate you and you fall for it. Ignorance is bliss. I have no sympathy for those who vote the same agenda time after time and get not a single thing in return. You are slaves, they are the masters. Maxine Waters, Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, Harry Reid, Dianne Feinstein, Elijah Cummings, John Lewis, Al Green and many more to include republicans(just not as many). They all use you, they all use race just to try and make an agenda, they are all millionaires who only lookout for themselves and use you to make the millions.

Columbus day should just stay as it is. People act like genocide never happened before he got to the americas and sad thats not true. The natives were committing genocide and other horrific acts long before Columbus came. And for the europeans they discovered new land. So it was a discovery since a majority of the civilized world did not know of it. And genocide has happened long after Columbus came here anyway. In Europe, in Africa, in asia and even in South America. Get over yourself.

Sure Columbus was a led to large numbers of death, but remember, the Aztecs literally tore out the hearts of living people in public demonstrations.
