Michelle Obama Launches Initiative to Support Education for Teen Girls

by Axios | Updated on 10.11.18

Michelle Obama announced that she will spearhead a new initiative to support adolescent girls' education around the world, per a CNN op-ed.

"Equally pernicious is something [girls are] taught from an early age — the belief that because they're girls, they're simply unworthy of an education. It's the same toxic mindset that keeps girls here in the United States from believing they can become computer scientists or CEOs."

What's happening: Obama's Global Girls Alliance will seek to empower and connect grassroots organizations that already exist and are working to eliminate hurdles to girls' education through scholarships and mentorship programs. Obama said the organization will work to identify programs that need support and has partnered with GoFundMe to create a social fundraising platform.

Mrs Obama's “Global Girls👧 Alliance” I’m in support of Mrs Obama's Global Girls Alliance which will seek to empower and connect grassroots organizations that already exist and are working to eliminate hurdles to girls' education through scholarships and mentorship programs. Just as long as the program DOES NOT Become a Political program to subvert the girls 👧 towards one side or the other political agenda. Mrs Obama said the organization will work to identify programs that need supporting and has partnered with GoFundMe to create a social fundraising platform. 10*11*18 ..... SneakyPete.....

Nope, the notion that girls in the US are discouraged from being educated and being worthy of fulfilling their dreams is FALSE. This is just a publicity stunt ahead of the midterms. The obamas are self serving, don’t be fooled.

First Lady Obama has always been a gracious, intelligent reminder of the ethical, compassionate, correct way to educate America’s youth. Bravo!

Like she said, 98 million teen girls around the world aren’t getting the education they need. And they can be threatened if they try to get education. I think this is a great idea.

Education? Or coerce them to vote the Democrat way? Methinks it’s the latter.

How many girls will they help? What will that help look like? What “education” are they offering? I’m all for girls being educated everywhere in the world, but I can’t change the world. I can only impact those I come into direct contact with.

Totally support this in countries that have limited education to young girls now or in the past. It should be supported through only private donations and it appears that they are doing that. Keep public monies at home to support our own education system.

If this lady were actually getting this message out to all races of girls not just black girls then maybe I could support her but as a previous 1st lady I expect her to see beyond racial lines to be an example of equality to this generation. Too bad she is unable to be that change.

How about support for TEENS? These kind of things masquerade as equal opportunity, but stand out to me as bold inequality.

Girls are already far surpassing boys in education, while it is important to give equal opportunity to both boys and girls, it seems more and more that boys are being left behind. Why not just fix the education system all together?!

Education is the key component to solve or at least begin to solve so many issues. Plus Mrs. Obama has continuously shown herself to represent the best of humanity and she truly cares about the children of the world.
