By mid-afternoon Monday, 58 people were confirmed dead at the mass shooting at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada, making it the deadliest mass shooting in recent U.S. history.

Location: Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada
Casualties: 58 killed, 515 injured.
From his room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel, Stephen Paddock fired on a crowd of 30,000 gathered for the Route 91 Music Festival. Police found Paddock dead in his hotel room, with, it’s being reported, 19 rifles and handguns.

Location: Pulse Nightclub, Orlando, Florida

Until the shooting in Las Vegas, the largest mass shooting in recent U.S. history occurred at Pulse, a popular gay nightclub in Orlando. A SWAT Team killed gunman Omar Mateen after he took hostages inside the club. Mateen had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). ISIL later claimed responsibility for the attack.

Casualties: 14 killed, 22 wounded
Newlyweds Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik stormed an office party at the social services center where Farook worked, open firing. The couple fled, but were killed in a shootout with police.

Location: Washington Navy Yard, Washington, D.C.
Casualties: 12 killed, 3 injured
Former Navy serviceman Aaron Alexis fired at random people, then led police on a shooting chase through the Navy yard. Authorities later revealed that Alexis had an extensive disciplinary record which included insubordination and disorderly conduct.

Location: Sandy Hook Elementary School, Newtown, Connecticut
Casualties: 28 killed
Gunman Adam Lanza killed his mother at their Connecticut home, then forced his way into the elementary school where he shot and killed 20 first graders and six adults. Lanza killed himself at the scene.

Location: Century 16 Movie Theater, Aurora, Colorado
Casualties: 12 killed, 58 injured
Decked out in body armor, James Holmes stormed a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises," opening fire and releasing tear gas. Holmes is serving a life sentence.

Location: Fort Hood Military Base, Ft. Hood, Texas
Casualties: 13 killed, 32 injured
U.S. Army psychiatrist Nidal Hasan went on a shooting rampage at his military base. The FBI has claimed that Hasan was exchanging emails with Muslim extremists before the attack. Hasan awaits execution while his case is being reviewed by an appellate court.

Vietnamese immigrant Jiverly Antares Wong open fired at an immigration services center before turning the gun on himself.

Location: Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia
Casualties: 32 killed, 17 injured
South Korean national, and Virginia Tech senior, Seung-Hui Cho opened fire in two separate attacks on campus: one in a dorm, the other in an academic building. He killed 27 students and five teachers before taking his own life.

Location: Columbine High School, Littleton, Colorado
Casualties: 13 killed, 24 injured
Two Columbine High students went a shooting rampage at their school, killing 12 students and a teacher before taking their own lives.
Date: October 16, 1991
Location: Luby’s Cafeteria, Killeen, Texas
Casualties: 22 killed, 20 wounded
Patrons were enjoying their lunch when George Jo Hennard crashed his pickup truck into the cafeteria then open fired with a semiautomatic pistol. The gunman killed himself in the restaurant bathroom.
