What’s the story?
- Actorvist Alyssa Milano appeared over the weekend on NBC’s “Meet the Press”, where she said the #MeToo movement "may have lost a political battle" but is "winning a cultural battle" after Brett Kavanaugh was confirmed to the Supreme Court.
- Milano, who hosts an Action Center on Countable, said on Sunday:
"Yesterday, we, we may have lost a political battle. But I do think we are winning the cultural battle. And often, I don't fight for the win. I'm fighting so that generations don't have to deal with the abuses of power that we've had to deal with.”
- A day earlier, Judge Brett Kavanaugh was sworn in as the 114th Supreme Court justice, just hours after the Senate voted to confirm President Donald Trump's nominee to the high court.
Has anything changed since the Clarence Thomas/Anita Hill hearing?
- In 1991, the Senate Judiciary Committee reopened Justice Clarence Thomas’ confirmation to hear Anita Hill’s sexual harassment allegations and the nominee’s response. Thomas was later confirmed to SCOTUS.
- On Sunday, Milano was asked about comments made by journalist Sally Quinn, who told the New Yorker that “not a damn thing” has changed since the Hill hearings in 90s.
- Milano said she believes “a lot has changed” since Hill’s hearings, but added “a lot hasn’t changed.”
"So in a respect, I think she is right," she said of Quinn. "But then I do think that there's a lot going on. And I think this, this, this cultural shift that we're feeling, this collective pain that we're feeling from survivors coming forward, is going to be able to be translated into a collective power, to say that we're not going to be silenced any longer."
What do you think?
Did you support Kavanaugh's confirmation to the Supreme Court? Did you consider it a political battle for the #MeToo movement? Should Democrats attempt to impeach Kavanaugh? Take action and tell your reps, then share your thoughts below.
