U.S. Begins Denying Diplomatic Visas to Unmarried Same-Sex Partners

by Axios | Updated on 10.2.18

Beginning Oct. 1, same-sex partners of foreign government officials and members of international organizations will not be eligible for diplomatic visas unless the couple is legally married, according to the State Department.

The big picture: The Obama administration directed the State Department to begin issuing visas to same-sex domestic partners of foreign service officers in 2009. The reversal by the Trump administration is meant to reflect the Supreme Court's 2015 decision to recognize gay marriage and ensure that same-sex and opposite-sex couples — who must be married in order to enjoy spousal benefits — are treated equally.

The other side: Critics have argued that because only 12% of UN member states allow same-sex marriage, the new policy will not actually promote equality. The State Department has said "limited exceptions" would be made for diplomats who come from countries where gay marriage is illegal, but did not say exceptions would be applied to UN officials, per ThinkProgress.

As long as it goes for unmarried hetero couples as well. Otherwise it’s just another bigoted policy from the most disgraceful, hateful, unchristian pos party to ever exist in the history of America. So what will it be? And as an edit: To all those saying that allowing gay marriage levels the field, I will point out that a. not all other countries allow it and b. most of the states and bigoted trumpanzees (looking at you again James) have found way to make it essentially impossible even in the states.

Is this another deal that #45 made with the Evangelical Christians for their vote and money? I’m beyond disgusted.

In 2009 back before same-sex marriage was legalized, President Obama accorded to Foreign Service Officers with same-sex partners (i.e., unmarried) “the same status, privileges and immunities currently accorded to married persons. Heterosexual “partners” (meaning unmarried couples) were not accorded the same because heterosexual marriage was legal. Now that same-sex marriage is legal, Trump is merely leveling the playing field for the sake of equality for all. Unmarried heterosexual partners are denied diplomatic Visas. So, it goes to follow, that to be fair, unmarried same-sex partners are also denied diplomatic Visas.

Why would we add more discrimination laws? I can’t believe we are still in this medieval mindset. We are a country of freedom right?

There is NO justification for this. This is pure prejudice against homosexuality. The same “if you are not married, got out policy must also apply to heterosexual couples. You know the next step by this administration is to deny same-sex marriages.

Why is the marital status of diplomats visiting the US any of our government's business? Does granting them visas hurt us in any way? I see no reason or logic behind this policy.

This separation of same sex couples is an abomination. Trump needs to be prosecuted, removed totally from office, office he occupies needs then to be cleansed. As reported by NYT, he’s committed massive fraud w income and taxes. Any and all decisions he makes should be null and void.

It’s no surprise that the Bigot in Chief and his third reich administration and the republikkkans would push this. I do know it also covers heterosexual partners BUT either way it sounds like another way to piss off our allies.

You idiots! There is nowhere in the world where a heteronormative couple cannot get married. There are only about 20 countries that recognize homosexuals right to marry. Do you really not understand the difference or are you simply being stupidly obtuse?

The leftist would have no platform at all if they did have someone or something to hate on. You leftist simpletons need to read the actual policy. Under Obamao unmarried diplomat heterosexual couples were denied visas, but unmarried diplomat gay couples were given visas. President Trumps administration Is normalizing the process to only give visas to married diplomat couples, gay and heterosexual while continuing to deny visas to unmarried diplomat couples gay and heterosexual. There is no hate or conspiracy associated with normalizing this process. The only issue I see is leftists upset that gays are not getting preferential treatment! Or the more likely issue is that they just hate President Trump and everything he does no matter how good it is for our country!

It is mind boggling to learn that there are actual humans in the current degenerating administration whose job is to find more and more and more ways to divide America from within and without. STOP cramming your archaic morals down our and the world's throat. VOTE BLUE IN NOVEMBER.

By not accepting gay partners of diplomats unless they are married, the US is forcing either the option of facing criminal penalties from diplomats whose home country doesn't allow gay marriage, or separation of families and deportation. This is unacceptable, and as an LGBT American, this is an attack on our rights globally. Shameful.

Just more homophobic BS from a government for the people. Congress needs to stand up and do the job they were hired to do - protect the Constitution, democratic values and principles - NOT the administration. You are a co-equal branch under the Constitution and should start acting like it! I am disgusted by the way you all roll over and let this group of racist, sexist, homophobic and misogynistic people do whatever they want to trample on the rights of people, just to avoid a tweet and the possibility of losing your job. You would be in a better position if you actually stood up for our values and stopped this nonsense.
