Hot Takes: Trumps Threatens to "Totally Destroy North Korea"

by Countable | 9.19.17

In a speech before the United Nation's General Assembly this morning, President Trump threatened to "totally destroy North Korea," if the US is forced to defend itself or its allies. The president said Kim Jong-un, the country's totalitarian leader, who Trump calls "Rocketman", "threatens the entire world with unthinkable loss of life." (For more details, see Trump Gives Incendiary address at UN.)

Reaction to the president's words was swift and varied.

From Los Angeles Times columnist David Lazarus:

Congressman Ted Lieu (D-CA), a vocal opponent of President Trump, wrote:

As for "Rocketman," President Trump's nickname for Kim Jong-un, you probably already guessed that it has spawned a jillion Elton John jokes and a flurry of photo-shopping. This pic, an obvious reference to the iconic 1964 Stanley Kubric film "Dr. Strangelove," is currently making the rounds of the internet (tweet @countable if you can ID its maker!):

Television commentator and conservative provocateur Kambree Kawahine Koa cheered the president's nickname for Kim Jong-un:

And on the other side of the spectrum, Scott Dworkin, co-founder of the Democratic Coalition against Trump, had this to say about the nickname:

This man will ignite WWlll and love doing it. Have we not witnessed how he loves military parades? Feeds into his narcissistic, egomaniacal personality. It's horrifyingly reminiscent of other dictators throughout history.

Totally irresponsible. This is not elementary school. A responsible, rational leader would not make a public threat to destroy a country when it is clear that it is a threat that could have dire consequences for everyone!

Like why is it so hard to get the POTUS out? We've seen enough. Get him out of office. He's endangering our lives along with future generations. His reign has to stop.

Trump lives in a world with no consequences. He always has. No skills or entrepreneurial sense? Don't worry your dad will give you millions. Bad with women? Don't worry you're famous just grab them by the pussy. Run a campaign in which you make fun of the disabled, refuse to denounce David Duke, insult war heroes and gold star families, while at the same time providing literally zero details on any policies you might support? Don't worry the white nationalists and misogynists afraid of Clinton will elect you anyways (with the help of Russia and the outdated electoral college). So by all means nuke North Korea, destroy our environment, repeal civil rights. I'm sure there will be no consequences... at least for trump

I just love it when the POTUS stands before the United Nations and tells them how he is going to annihilate not just one country but most likely all as he begins WW3 with nuclear weapons forgetting to check with his own country first if this is how we wish to proceed. All Republicans out in front!

Before you all get wound up, listen to the speech before you believe the way it is characterized in this forum. Quite often deceptive excerpts of statements are profiled on here.

The president is an idiot. What grown man, let alone the president of the United States, would be in a setting such as the United Nations and name call a leader "rocketman?" He sounds like he is in junior high! I am ashamed and I also loathe this man. I want him out of office NOW! Bob Mueller has to be able to indict him! The world should not have a leader like trump with his finger anxiously awaiting to push the nuclear button. It is unfair that the republicans haven't done what is right and impeached him to make our country and the world safer. Do we need to revolt? Or should we let him push the button and turn into a total dictator? Something HAS TO BE DONE!

It does not matter if trump said anything that could have made sense in the beginning. He made the mistake of going off on his own at the end with his threat against NK and that is what the world heard. He is unfit to command, not because he is insane, but because his judgement is impaired and he has no leadership skills, is lacking in compassion and education, has no relative experience in diplomacy, no respect for law and justice and no ability to access possible consequences of his actions.

After the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, Albert Einstein said, "With the dropping of the atomic bomb everything has changed except human thinking. Thus we drift toward unparalleled disaster." It appears that because of the moron who has his finger on the button we are at the brink.

The biggest threat to America is its own president. This man is a disgrace, 700 billion for the pentagon is a disgrace. Militarism is a malignant cancer in our country, and Trump is its salesman.

I get it that no one wants this war. I don't. But we have tried everything and they continue to build up their nuclear arsenal and soon they will start selling their H bombs to Iran, ISIS, and who ever is willing to pay for them. That is the problem we cannot just let them continue like this.

He is a poor speaker. His vocabulary, hand gestures, topics, transitions, tone and voice are amateurish, driven toward his followers--which makes all of this inappropriate to the world stage, and his dark view is disinviting toward the rest of the world. His basic view of thinking of himself first is what other dictators are doing already and this will lead to the basic destruction of world cooperation and general improvement. He is making America small and it will take several administrations to repair the damage he is making everyday.

I wish some people on here would be more patriotic and not bash their own president. I get that you might not agree with everything he says or does but you guys are hypocritical. It's us vs. them, not our president! North Korea is to blame here! They are threatening us and our allies. Trump wants the best for our country. He wouldn't have been elected if that wasn't the case. Support the decision to keep peace by dismantling North Korea.

Let's not jump to conclusions here. Maybe Trump simply intends capitalize on his success in destroying the US and will look for a job in N. Korea government next.

Trump 2020! For the rest of you whiny brats, sometimes war is necessary. You all would complain no matter what. If NK sent bombs over, you'd blame Trump for not acting on their threats. Go Trump!
