Trump Prefers a Two-State Solution — Do You?

What’s the story?
- President Donald Trump told the UN General Assembly on Wednesday that he’d like to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by creating two separates states.
“I like a two-state solution. That’s what I think works best…That’s my feeling,” Trump said at a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
- Trump also revealed that his administration would produce its Mideast peace plan within four months. The president’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, helped devise it.
Why does it matter?
- The Trump administration has said in the past that it would only support a two-state solution if both sides agreed to it and this is the clearest example of the president’s support for that outcome.
What are the reps of the two states saying?
- “I am open to the idea of the Palestinians ruling themselves as long as they can’t harm us,” Netanyahu said following his meeting with Trump, adding:
“I’m sure every American plan will reflect this issue to a large extent, or perhaps even to a full extent. Kushner says everyone defines a state in a different way. What is a state? Is it Costa Rica or Iran? Who has security control? Israel or others?’’
- Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is scheduled to address the UN on Thursday where he’ll deliver “a clear speech to the president that outlines the real features of a final peace,” according to his spokesman.
“The road to peace requires a two-state solution, a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders and East Jerusalem as its capital, and this is the Arab and international position,” spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeina said in a statement.
